13. TOWNS

The CR Government Order No. 475 of 2 November 1990 laid down a list of authorized local governments. The district authorities acted accordingly and defined territorial competence of each authorized local government, i.e. they affiliated municipalities to their relevant authorized local governments. Changes in the affiliation can be effected by means of district authority notices, usually on request of municipalities concerned.

The table lists the authorized local governments broken down by district and contains the number of municipalities falling under the territorial districts of individual authorized local governments along with areas of the districts in hectares. The indicator Population as per HPC (Housing and Population Census) refers to the number of persons permanently resident in a municipality in the territorial district concerned. The number given for 2001 also includes foreign persons with a long-term stay (exceeding 90 days) in the given territory. The data are converted to correspond to the territorial structure as at 1 March 2001. The numbers of job applicants are taken over from the employment offices in the individual districts and are kept in the database of statistics on towns and municipalities (MOS database).

Towns are municipalities granted the status of town pursuant to the Act on Municipalities. The tables give overviews on municipalities in regions, broken down by population data obtained through the 1 March 2001 Housing and Population Census.

Basic demographic data covering last three years are given for each town. The data are obtained from reports of births, deaths and migration. Listed are also data on the age distribution of population in towns as at 31 December 2000, selected types of public infrastructure of towns, and the number of enterprises having their head offices in the towns. All these data (and many more) are included in the MOS database.
