Statistická ročenka Ústeckého kraje

Introduction

INTRODUCTION

The Statistical Yearbook of the Ústecký Region gives a comprehensive overview of indicators measured by the State Statistical Service at the regional level. It is the first time that the public is presented with data according to the new regional breakdown in force since 1 January 2000. On this date the constitutional Act No. 347/97 Coll., of 3 December 1997, on the Establishment of Higher Territorial Self-governing Units split the territory of the Czech Republic into fourteen administrative regions, which correspond to the NUTS3 level of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics.

Depending on their availability, data for 1998 to 2000 and data on selected indicators going back to as early as 1990 were adjusted to correspond to the new territorial setup. Besides the data on regions with a different level of detail, data on districts inside the regions and available information on towns are published too. The structure of this regional yearbook is derived from the structure of the national Statistical Yearbook of the Czech Republic. The regional yearbook is unified with the yearbooks brought out by the other CZSO Regional Offices, which creates an information basis for the mutual comparison of regions and districts. The authors intend to bring it out every year and in doing so to lay foundations for the establishment in the future of a standard system of regional information for a wide range of users throughout the Czech Republic.

The main sources of data are state statistical surveys. In addition to sources of the Czech Statistical Office, data available from other departments were also made use of, primarily from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the CR, the Ministry of the Interior of the CR, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the CR (the Institute of Information on Education), and the Ministry of Health of the CR (the Institute of Health Information and Statistics). A considerable portion of the data released is kept in the regional databases KROK (regions and districts) and MOS (towns and municipalities).

The purpose of the acquired information is knowledge, identification of development tendencies and, in particular, practical use. In the acquisition, processing and evaluation of information the State Statistical Service has an irreplaceable role to play. Being aware of their mission, the staff of the CZSO Regional Office endeavoured in preparing the yearbook to facilitate access to the extensive set of available information as much as possible, make the user familiar with some outputs of the statistical activity at the regional level, and offer the book form of the information to those not yet equipped with sufficient electronic means.

It stands to reason that the regional statistical yearbook cannot embrace all the data that are collected and processed by the State Statistical Service. Rather detailed data regarding individual areas of the demographic, economic and social development of regions, districts, municipalities, micro-regions, etc. are released in specialized publications (bulletin, publications dealing with demography, publications with housing and population census or election results, etc.). Besides, experts in information services units of the CZSO Regional Offices can process a number of information to non-standard order.

There is only a fraction of our data and information, but we do hope that the publication will fulfil the expected goal, become a sought-after and useful material for experts and laymen and heighten the interest in statistical services.
