Methodology

14. COMPARISON OF CITIES, INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON

This chapter includes comparison of selected cities of the Czech Republic, regional cities and selected capital cities of neighbouring countries.

In the first part of this chapter, we compared the biggest towns of the Czech republic - Praha, Brno, Ostrava and Plzeň. The basic criterion for the selection was population. Another criterion was position among self-governing units (regional towns) and also inclusion of towns in the CZ NUTS category. A town is a municipality, which was granted status of a chartered town based on the Act on Municipalities. In this Yearbook, we compared Praha, Brno, Ostrava and Plzeň according to selected demographic data of the Czech Statistical Office. Indicators to be compared - as for towns of the CR - were selected according to data availability.

In table 14-6., the comparison of all fourteen regional cities can be found. Cities are arranged according to population. Contrary to previous tables, data are presented in 3 basic areas: basic characteristics, population and dwellings.

In the next part, you can find selected data on neighbouring capital cities, excluding Germany. Berlin was not included because it is hard to compare this city with the other capital cities of our neighbours due to its size and position in Germany. We decided to compare the basic available data and indicators of Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Wien and Warszawa. For this international comparison, data was provided by the workplaces of national statistical offices of Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Poland, which are specialized on the statistics of particular capital cities.

Analytical indicators that are not used in previous chapters:

Index of dependency I - number of children aged 0 - 14 per 100 persons aged 15 - 64

Index of dependency II - number of persons aged 65+ per 100 persons aged 15 - 64

Economic burden index - number of children aged 0 - 14 and number of persons aged 65+ per 100 persons aged 15 – 64

Index of ageing – number of persons at age of 65+ per 100 persons at aged 0 – 14

Gross reproduction rate – the average number of girls that would be born alive to a woman with presumption that age-specific fertility rates of a given year remain unchanged during her childbearing period (age 15-49)
