Sale of cars dropped

In March, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal adjustment increased by 0.4% at constant prices, month-on-month. Working days adjusted sales increased by 1.5%, year-on-year. Non-adjusted sales decreased by 0.3%, y-o-y, which was contributed to partly by a lower number of working days. Growth was recorded only in sale of non-food goods.

After seasonal adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles increased by 0.4% at constant prices in March, m-o-m; working days adjusted sales increased by 1.5%, year-on-year. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 0.3%; there were less working days (-1). The year-on-year development of sales was influenced mainly by a decrease in sale and repair of motor vehicles and sale of food (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 0.9% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, adjusted for working days increased by 1.4%. Non-adjusted sales decreased by 1.7%, y-o-y; for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased by 0.9% and for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles by 6.2%. Sale of motor vehicles dropped after eight months of continual growth.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 1.0%, m-o-m; working days adjusted sales increased by 1.5%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales increased by 0.3%, y-o-y; for sale of non-food goods sales increased by 2.8%, while for automotive fuel and food they dropped by 2.3% and 2.1%, respectively.

The highest growth of sales was at retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+12.5%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (+10.7%), and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+6.3%). More moderate growth was recorded at retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (+1.9%), retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+1.1%), sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (+0.7%). A drop was recorded at retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (-2.1%) and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-1.8%).

The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 101.7% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. On the contrary, the deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores.

Sales at constant prices for the whole first quarter of 2012 in retail trade including automotive segment increased by 0.9%, year-on-year. In the automotive segment, sales increased by 1.4% and in retail trade alone (including sale of automotive fuel) by 0.8%. Sales for non-food goods increased by 2.9%, and for automotive fuel as a result of an increase in January by 0.4%, while for food, on the contrary, they dropped by 2.0%.
