Growth of sale of non-food goods

In January, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal and working day adjustment stagnated at constant prices, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales decreased by 0.5%, year-on-year. The y-o-y increase of non-adjusted sales by 1.3% was the most contributed to by increased sale of non-food goods, automotive fuel and motor vehicles. Especially in the automotive segment the growth was influenced also by a higher number of working days.

After seasonal and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles stagnated at constant prices in January, m-o-m; only working days adjusted decreased by 0.5%, year-on-year. The y-o-y increase of non-adjusted sales by 1.3% was influenced at the higher number of working days (+1) mainly by an increase of sale of non-food goods, automotive fuel and motor vehicles, while the opposite effect came from the drop of sale of food (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 0.8% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, adjusted for working days decreased by 1.6%. Non-adjusted sales increased by 1.5%, y-o-y; for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 1.3% and for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles by 2.6%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 0.4%, m-o-m; working days adjusted stagnated, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales increased by 1.2%, y-o-y; for sale of automotive fuel by 4.8% and non-food goods by 3.4%, while sales for food dropped by 3.2%.

In a more detailed breakdown, all main assortment groups of non-food goods reported growth. The highest growth of sale was at retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+9.1%), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+8.7%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (+7.5%), sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+5.6%), household equipment in specialised stores (+1.8%), sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (+1.5%), and in other retail sale in non-specialised stores (+1.1%). Sale decreased only in sale of food both in non-specialised stores (-3.4%) and specialised stores (-0.2%).

The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 101.8% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. On the contrary, the deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores.

According to data released by Eurostat, seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 increased in January 2012 at constant prices by 0.4%, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, working day adjusted sales increased by 0.7%. The fastest growth of sales was in Lithuania (+17.0%), Latvia (+16.6%), and Romania (+10.2%), while the deepest price falls were in Portugal (-8.7%), Malta (-5.7%), and Bulgaria (-2.6%).
