Sales in retail trade increased by 1.0% in 2010
In December, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased at constant prices by 2.1%, month-on-month, and by 1.3%, year-on-year. The y-o-y decrease of seasonally non-adjusted sales by 0.2% was influenced mainly by lower sale in retail trade.
For the entire year 2010, sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased at constant prices by 1.0%, year-on-year.

After seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased in December by 2.1%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and by 1.3%, year-on-year (after only working day adjustment by 1.9%). Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 0.2%, y-o-y (there was 1 working day more than in the corresponding month of 2009). The y-o-y decrease was caused mainly by sale in retail trade (-2.1 p.p.), while the development in the automotive segment had the opposite effect (+1.9 p.p.; see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 3.7% at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year-on-year comparison they increased by 5.7%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales increased by 7.9%, y-o-y, of which for sale of motor vehicles and motorcycles (including spare parts) it was by 8.7% and for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles by 4.6%. Also in this month, the increase was influenced by sale of trucks, and sale and assembly of spare parts and tyres.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices decreased by 1.4%, m-o-m, and by 4.0%, y-o-y. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 2.8%, y-o-y, of which sales for sale of automotive fuel decreased by 14.2%, of food by 1.3%, and of non-food goods by 1.2%.
Sales decreased in most of the assortment groups of outlets. Besides the already mentioned decrease of sale of automotive fuel, also retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores decreased (-5.8%), smaller sales were in other retail sale in non-specialised stores, too (-4.2%), as well as in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-3.8%), retail sale of medical goods, cosmetic articles and dispensing chemist in specialised stores (-2.3%), and in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-0.5%). In retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating their sales decreased by 1.1%, of which for enterprises with 100+ employees (into which mainly retail chains belong), on the contrary, sales increased by 0.4%. Consumers focused on purchases via mail order houses or via Internet (growth by 16.3%), on clothing and footwear in specialised stores (+2.7%), and on cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+1.7%).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 100.8%. Continuing significant price increase was recorded in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialised stores (+16.6%), markedly smaller increase was reported for prices of goods sold in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (+1.5%), in retail sale via stalls and markets (+0.8%), and in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (+0.3%). The biggest price drops were reported for prices of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-7.4%), second-hand goods in stores (-5.4%), retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (-4.4%), and clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (-4.3%).
In December 2010, according to data released by Eurostat, seasonally adjusted retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 decreased by 0.4% at constant prices, month-on-month; working day adjusted sales decreased by 0.1%, year-on-year. The deepest decreases of sales were reported for Romania (-9.4%), Spain (-5.0%), and Malta (-3.6%), while the fastest growth of sales was in Poland (+12.4%), Latvia (+8.1%), and Estonia (+7.0%).

For the entire year 2010, the sales in retail trade including automotive segment (CZ-NACE 45+47) increased, y-o-y, by 1.0% at constant prices. The overall development was influenced primarily by the increase of sales in the automotive segment.
After the drop of sales in 2009, the market in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) recovered and in 2010 the sales increased by 6.6%, y-o-y; however, they have not reached the level from the year 2008. The development was influenced primarily by an increase of sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) by 8.4%, while sales for repairs decreased by 2.4%.
In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) a 1.1% drop of sales was recorded, y-o-y, while higher level compared to 2009 was reached only in March, June, September, and November. The drop of sale of automotive fuel by 5.8% was influenced by a rather high y-o-y price growth, which started in December 2009. Sales for non-food goods decreased by 0.7%, while for food they increased by 0.2%. The average price deflator for 2010 was 100.7%. Prices of automotive fuel increased by 16.0%, while in retail sale of non-food goods they dropped by 2.5%, and in retail sale of food by 0.9%.
