Retail trade sales decrease continued

Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 8.8%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y) in August; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 0.7%.

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased by 0.7% in real terms, month‑on‑month, in August. Sales for sale of non-food goods and sales for sale of food decreased both by 1.1%, whereas sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 3.2%.

Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 8.8%, year-on-year. Sales for sale of non-food goods decreased by 10.3%, sales for sale of automotive fuel by 9.2%, and sales for sale of food by 6.6%.

“Development in sale of both food and non-food goods contributed to the year-on-year decrease of sales in retail trade. Sales of those industries (economic activities) were decreasing already for the fourth successive month and the decrease further deepened in August. Lower sale of automotive fuel also contributed to the decrease of sales in retail trade; however, compared to the previous month, the decrease slowed down,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the CZSO, says.

“A decrease of sales in retail trade continued in all assortment types of stores except for stores with dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods. Sales in online shops (retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet) also decreased,” Marie Boušková, Director of the Trade, Transport, Services, Tourism, and Environmental Statistics Department of the CZSO, adds.

Sales in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores decreased by 15.1%, in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores by 13.2%, in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 12.7%, and in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 12.6%. Sales in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores stagnated. On the other hand, sales in stores with dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods increased by 1.3%. As for food stores, a higher sales decrease was in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (by 12.5%) than in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (by 6.2%). In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales decreased by 10.2%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) decreased in real terms, m-o-m, by 1.8% and in the y-o-y comparison they decreased by 7.2%. Sales decreased for both sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) as well as for repair of motor vehicles.
