Sales in retail trade were increasing again

In May, sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 5.8% in real terms (at constant prices), year‑on‑year (y-o-y). Non-adjusted sales increased by 8.1%, y-o-y. Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 7.3%, month-on-month (m-o-m).


Seasonally adjusted
sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) increased in real terms (at constant prices) by 7.3%, m-o-m, in May. Sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 11.8%, sales for sale of automotive fuel by 4.0%, and sales for sale of food by 2.0%.

Sales in retail trade adjusted for calendar effects increased by 5.8%, y-o-y. Sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 8.4%, sales for sale of automotive fuel by 8.1%, and sales for sale of food by 1.5%. May 2021 had two working days more than May 2020.

Non-adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 8.1%, y-o-y. Sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 12.2%, sales for sale of automotive fuel by 10.9%, and sales for sale of food by 1.8%.

Development of sales in retail trade was influenced by relaxing of measures to halt the spread of coronavirus. Sales mainly increased in the following: specialised stores with non-food goods, especially in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (by 41.1%), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (by 16.6%), retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (by 14.0%), dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores (by 9.6%), and retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (by 4.5%). On the other hand, lower sales compared to the previous year were reported by retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (by 2.6%). Sales increased for sale of food in both retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (by 6.0%) and in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (by 1.6%). Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) kept its double-digit growth (by 15.6%).

The price deflator in retail trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 102.2%. It was mainly influenced by higher prices of automotive fuel, cultural and recreation goods, other household equipment, clothing, footwear and leather goods, dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, and food. Conversely, prices of cosmetic and toilet articles and of information and communication equipment decreased.

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) decreased in real terms (at constant prices) by 1.3%, m-o-m, and sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 34.0%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales increased by 43.6%, y-o-y; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 47.7%, y‑o-y, and sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 28.4%, y‑o‑y.

Data for April 2021 have been revised in accordance with the CZSO revision policy. Data for May 2021 are preliminary. Final data for all months of 2021 will be published in March 2022.

We point out that since the way estimates for non-surveyed part of the sample are made has changed, previously released data may be revised more.
