Retail Trade - December 2011
Sales in retail trade for the year 2011 increased by 1.9%
In December, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal and working day adjustment increased at constant prices by 0.5%, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales increased by 3.3%, year-on-year. The y-o-y increase of non-adjusted sales by 1.6% was the most contributed to by sale of non-food goods and motor vehicles.
For the entire year 2011, sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased at constant prices by 1.9%, year-on-year.
After seasonal and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles increased at constant prices by 0.5% in December, m-o-m; only working days adjusted increased by 3.3%, year-on-year. The y-o-y increase of non-adjusted sales by 1.6% was influenced at the lower number of working days (-1) by increase of sale of non-food goods and motor vehicles (see Table 2).
Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 1.3% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, adjusted for working days increased by 7.1%. Non-adjusted sales increased by 3.8%, y-o-y; for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 5.2%, while for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles they dropped by 2.4%.
In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 0.2%, m-o-m; working days adjusted increased by 2.0%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales increased by 0.8%, y-o-y, owing to higher sale of non-food goods by 4.1%, while sales for food and automotive fuel dropped (-3.4% and -2.5%, respectively).
Growth of sales for non-food goods was influenced the most by increased retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (+9.5%). Higher interest of consumers continued also in purchases of information and communication equipment (sales growth by 10.7%). Sales increase was reported also by retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (+4.7%) and sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (+1.7%). Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet recorded also growth (+4.2%); however, compared to previous months, it slowed down markedly. Growth of retail sales was decelerated by the already mentioned drop of sale of automotive fuel and food, both in specialised and non-specialised stores (-3.5% and -1.8%, respectively). Sale decreased also in other retail sale in non-specialised stores (-5.8%) and at sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (-1.0%) and thus it had not exceeded the level of the corresponding period of the previous year for the second time in 2011.
The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 102.0% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. On the contrary, the deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores.
Development in the year 2011
For the entire year 2011, the sales in retail trade including automotive segment (CZ-NACE 45+47) increased, y-o-y, by 1.9% at constant prices. The overall development was influenced primarily by the increase of sales in the automotive segment.
In sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) the sales increased at constant prices by 5.4%, y-o-y; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 6.3% and for repairs by 0.1%. Sales for sale of motor vehicles were growing in all months of 2011 except for June; marked increases were in the first quarter. Sales were growing the most also for repairs in the first quarter (+6.1%); on the contrary, in the second and fourth quarter they dropped, y-o-y (-2.1% and -3.1%, respectively).
In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) sales at constant prices increased by 0.4%, y-o-y, while growth was recorded only in the first half-year and in the second half-year decrease prevailed. Sales for non-food goods increased by 2.6%, y-o-y drop occurred only in September. The sale of food dropped by 1.2%; a higher level when compared to the previous year it reached only in January, February, and April. Sales for automotive fuel were decreasing during the entire year except for August (-3.5% in total). The average price deflator for 2011 was 102.2%. Prices for automotive fuel have increased by 11.0%, in retail sale of food by 4.4%, while in non-food goods they dropped by 1.9%.
