Sales dropped the most in the automotive segment

In February, sales in retail trade including the automotive segment after seasonal adjustment decreased by 1.3% at constant prices, month-on-month. Sales adjusted for the different number of working days and calendar effects decreased by 1.7%, y-o-y; non-adjusted sales dropped by 4.7%, y-o-y. A decrease was recorded by both the automotive segment and the retail trade alone.

After seasonal adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased in February by 1.3% at constant prices, m-o-m. Working days adjusted as well as calendar effects adjusted sales decreased by 1.7%, year-on-year. Non-adjusted sales decreased by 4.7%, y-o-y; the drop of sales was recorded in both the automotive segment and retail trade (see Table 2). In February 2013 there was 1 working and calendar day less.

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 1.3% at constant prices, m-o-m, and sales adjusted for the influence of the number of days dropped by 5.4%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales dropped by 7.1%, y-o-y; for the repair of motor vehicles it was -7.9% and for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) it was -7.0%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices decreased by 1.3%, m-o-m, and sales adjusted for the influence of the number of days by 0.2%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales dropped by 3.6%, y-o-y; for automotive fuel it was -7.2%, for food -5.0%, and for non-food goods -1.5%.

Decreases were recorded in most of the surveyed assortment groups; the biggest influence came from retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating, in which sales dropped by 4.8%. Sales decreased also in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (-13.1%), retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-7.0%), retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-2.8%), and sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (-1.6%). On the contrary, growth was reported by retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+3.7%) and retail sale of clothing and footwear in specialised stores (+2.7%). Increased interest of consumers continued in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+20.8%).

The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 99.8%. The highest y-o-y growth of prices was recorded for food and dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles, while in most of non-food goods decreasing of prices continued, which was the most marked in the assortment of information and communication equipment.
