Sixth month of y-o-y drop of food sales

In October, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal and working day adjustment increased at constant prices by 1.0%, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales increased by 1.5%, year-on-year, the same as non-adjusted. The y-o-y increase of sales was influenced mainly by the development in automotive segment.

After seasonal and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles increased at constant prices by 1.0% in October, m-o-m; only working days adjusted increased by 1.5%, year-on-year. The same growth was recorded also for non-adjusted sales. The overall y-o-y sales increase was contributed to (at the same number of working days in 2011 and 2010) by sale of motor vehicles and motorcycles (including spare parts) and non-food goods, the opposite effect came from sale of food and automotive fuel (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 3.0% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, both adjusted for working days and non-adjusted increased by 8.5%. Non-adjusted sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 10.3%, y-o-y, while for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles they dropped by 1.1%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 0.1%, m-o-m; working days adjusted dropped by 1.3%, y-o-y, the same as non-adjusted. Non-adjusted sales for automotive fuel decreased by 4.5%, y-o-y, for food dropped by 2.7%, while for non-food goods increased by 0.7%, y-o-y.

Sale of food dropped in both specialised and non-specialised stores (-4.7% and -2.6%, respectively). At the same time, sales dropped in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-1.4%) and sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (-0.9%). High growth rate was kept in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+10.9%) as well as retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+7.1%). Retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores as well as retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores returned to growth after a decrease in the previous month (+3.5% and 3.0%, respectively).

The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 103.2% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. On the contrary, the deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-10.6%).
