January sales missed their aim, consumers did their shopping in December

In January, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased month-on-month by 0.6% at constant prices, however, only due to the increased sale of motor vehicles. By contrast, the sale of the non-food goods decreased. In the year-on-year comparison, sales dropped by 3.6% and seasonally non-adjusted sales by 5.0%, which was partly contributed to also by smaller number (-1) of working days compared to 2009.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased in January by 0.6%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and dropped by 3.6% in the year-on-year comparison (with only WDA –3.4%). Seasonally non-adjusted sales were 5.0% down, (January 2010 had one working day less than January 2009). The drop was more contributed to by retail trade (-3.4 p.p.) than the automotive segment (-1.6 p.p.).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 5.6% at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year-on-year comparison sales dropped by 3.7%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped, y-o-y, by 6.2%, of which sales from the sale of motor vehicles decreased by 3.7% and from repair by 17.7%. Automotive segment due to its m-o-m growth and the smallest y-o-y drop since April 2009 is perceived as a sign of gradual improvement especially in the sale of passenger cars.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales decreased, m-o-m, by 1.2% at constant prices, and, by 3.5% in the year-on-year comparison. The year-on-year drop was the biggest one in time series from 2000 and came almost exclusively from the non-foods goods and fuel. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 4.6%, y-o-y, of which sales from the sale fuel and the non-food goods by 9.3% and 6.7%, respectively. By contrast, sales from the sale of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 0.3%.

The specialized stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods recorded the biggest sales drop among all important product assortments (-9.4%), the sale of fuel recorded a significant drop (-9.3%), which came, most probably, from a combined effect of freezing weather and high prices. The sales drop was reported also for household goods (-9.0%), food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores (-7.0%) and clothing and footwear (-5.9%). The sales from the sale of other non-food goods were also smaller compared to January 2009 but the drop was less dramatic. Consumers apparently profited from discounts more by the end of 2009 and did less shopping in January. Only sales in the non-specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating grew (+1.0%) including sales in big chain stores and in retail sale of information and communication equipment (+0.7%).

The price deflator related to the corresponding period in 2009 was 100.7%. The biggest price increase was recorded in the sale of fuel (+21.3%), significantly smaller increase was recorded in prices of pharmaceutical and medical goods (+2.4%). By contrast, the biggest price drop was reported for information and communication equipment (-8.3%), second-hand goods (-6.1%), clothing and footwear (-3.8%), culture and recreation products (-3.6%), goods sold via the Internet or mail order houses (-3.2%) and in the non-specialized stores (-3.1%).

In January, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 decreased month-on-month by 0.3% at constant prices and, working day adjusted sales dropped by 1.6%, year-on-year. The biggest drops of sales were reported for Latvia (-16.0%), Lithuania (-13.6%) and Romania (-10.3%). The fastest growth rates were reported for Sweden (+3.4%), Malta (+2.6%) and Austria (+2.4%).
