Industrial production increased by 1.7% in 2022

Code: 150153-22

Industrial production increased in real terms by 4.0%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in December. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 0.2% higher. The value of new orders increased by 10.1%, y-o-y.

“Industrial production in 2022 increased by 1.7% and equalised with the pre-covid level of production from the year 2019. This result was influenced the most by manufacture of motor vehicles, where production increased by over a tenth, year-on-year. In many other key economic activities (industries) of Czech manufacturing, however, production decreased, year-on-year,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

Industrial production in December 2022 was in real terms by 0.2% higher, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it increased by 4.0%. Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, in which production due to a lower comparison basis increased by 30%, year-on-year, contributed the most significantly to the increase. Most enterprises from the automotive segment maintained a y-o-y increase in December. At the end of the year, production successfully increased in the following: manufacture of leather and related products and manufacture of wearing apparel. In manufacture of wearing apparel, mainly an increased domestic demand was reflected. Industrial production decreased the most in manufacture of other transport equipment where a high comparison basis was reflected as well as a high degree of completion of long-term orders. In December, production also continued to decrease in two important economic activities of industry: in chemical industry and in manufacture of basic metals. Especially in the latter, consequences of high energy intensity of production and decreased demand, mainly from abroad, have been reflected for a long-term.

“December results of industry confirmed the trend of the previous months of 2022. Production of industry as a whole stagnated, although in individual economic activities (industries) various fluctuations occurred. It is also confirmed by data on new industrial orders the value of which increased, y-o-y, however, the m-o-m comparison does not indicate a significant increase of the volume of orders,” Veronika Doležalová, Head of the Industrial Statistics Unit of the CZSO, adds.

The value of new orders at current prices in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities increased by 10.1%, y-o-y, in December 2022. Non-domestic new orders increased by 9.3%, y-o-y; domestic new orders increased by 11.6%. Similarly as for production, manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers contributed the most to the increase of the value of new orders – thanks to the low comparison basis, new orders in this economic activity (industry) increased by a quarter, year-on-year. The value of new orders also increased by over a quarter in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products. A decrease in the value of new orders in manufacture of other transport equipment was influenced by a high comparison basis from December 2022 when large long-term contracts were concluded.

The average registered number of employees in industry decreased by 0.6%, y-o-y, in December 2022. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased in December 2022 by 7.8%, y-o-y.

According to data released by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 increased by 2.0%, year-on-year, in November 2022. Czech industry increased by 0.5%, y-o-y. The biggest year-on-year growth was recorded by Ireland (by 34.9%) and Malta (by 15.5%). On the other hand, Estonian industry decreased the most (by 12.2%). Performance of German industry decreased by 0.2%.

Notes:

December 2022 had one working day less compared to December 2021.
The year-on-year development of all indicators is published after having been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month or quarter-on-quarter rates have also been seasonally adjusted. Contributions to an increase or to a decrease have been calculated from data that had been adjusted for working days.
