Industrial production decreased by 0.5% in 2019
In 2019, industrial production decreased by 0.5%, y-o-y. The value of new orders was by 1.2% higher. Employment dropped by 1.1% and the average wage was 6.2% up.
Industrial production1) decreased in December 2019 in real terms (at constant prices) by 0.9%, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it decreased by 3.4%. The decrease was partially influenced by higher taking of holidays and reduction of production in the end of the year. The following economic activities contributed the most to the y-o-y change in industrial production: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution −1.8 percentage point (p. p.), drop by 10.3%), manufacture of fabricated metal products (contribution −0.7 p. p., drop by 7.2%), and manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution −0.3 p. p., drop by 11.2%). Industrial production increased in the following economic activities: manufacture of electrical equipment (contribution +0.6 p. p., growth by 9.1%), manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (contribution +0.3 p. p., growth by 25.4%), and repair and installation of machinery and equipment (contribution +0.1 p. p., growth by 2.9%). Non-adjusted industrial production was by 0.9% lower, y-o-y (there was one working day more in December 2019 compared to December 2018).
Sales from industrial activity at current prices2) decreased by 0.2%, y-o-y, in December 2019. Direct export sales of industrial enterprises decreased at current prices by 1.5%. Domestic sales, which include also indirect export via non-industrial enterprises increased at current prices by 1.3%.
The value of new orders2) in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities decreased by 2.7%, y-o-y, in December 2019. Non-domestic new orders decreased by 3.7%, while domestic new orders decreased by 0.4%. The y-o-y decrease of new orders in total was contributed to by the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of basic metals (contribution −1.2 p. p., drop by 20.6%), manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution −1.1 p. p., drop by 33.4%), and manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (contribution −1.0 p. p., drop by 19.6%). New orders increased in manufacture of electrical equipment (contribution +2.7 p. p., growth by 28.9%), manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (contribution +0.2 p. p., growth by 15.2%), and manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution +0.1 p. p., growth by 0.8%).
The average registered number of employees3) in industry decreased in December 2019 by 1.8%, y-o-y. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased in December 2019 by 7.2%, y-o-y.
According to the Eurostat news release, working day adjusted industrial production in the EU28 in November 2019 decreased by 1.3%, y-o-y. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for December 2019 on 12 February 2020.
Industry in the fourth quarter of 2019
Seasonally adjusted industrial production1) in the Q4 2019 decreased by 0.5% compared to the Q3 2019. In the year-on-year comparison, it decreased by 2.3%. Non-adjusted industrial production was by 3.4% lower, y-o-y (there was one working day less in the Q4 2019 compared to the Q4 2018).
Sales from industrial activity at current prices2) were lower by 3.0%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2019. Direct export sales of industrial enterprises decreased at current prices by 4.6%. Domestic sales, which include also indirect export via non-industrial enterprises, decreased at current prices by 0.9%.
The value of new orders2) in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities decreased by 3.5%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2019. Non-domestic new orders decreased by 3.9%, while domestic new orders decreased by 2.8%.
The average registered number of employees3) in industry decreased by 1.6%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2019. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 5.3%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2019.
Industry in 2019
In 2019, industrial production1) decreased by 0.5%, y-o-y. The following contributed the most to the y-o-y change of industrial production: manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution −0.22 p. p., drop by 2.6%), manufacture of fabricated metal products (contribution −0.20 p. p., drop by 1.9%), and manufacture of basic metals (contribution −0.17 p. p., drop by 5.7%). Industrial production increased in manufacture of electrical equipment (contribution +0.4 p. p., growth by 5.7%), manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (contribution +0.2 p. p., growth by 19.3%), and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution +0.1 p. p., growth by 0.7%). Non-adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.4%, y-o-y (there was one working day more in 2019 compared to 2018).
Sales from industrial activity at current prices2) were higher by 1.6%, y-o-y, in 2019. Direct export sales of industrial enterprises increased at current prices by 1.2%. Domestic sales, which include also indirect export via non-industrial enterprises, increased at current prices by 2.1%.
The value of new orders in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities increased by 1.2%, y-o-y, in 2019. Non-domestic new orders increased by 0.4%, while domestic new orders increased by 3.0%.
The average registered number of employees3) in industry decreased by 1.1%, y-o-y, in 2019. Their average gross monthly nominal wage in 2019 increased by 6.2%, y-o-y.

1) The year-on-year development of industrial production is adjusted for working days unless otherwise stated. Month-on-month or quarter-on-quarter rates are also seasonally adjusted. Contributions to an increase or to a decrease are calculated from data that are adjusted for working days.
2) The year-on-year development of sales at current prices and the value of new orders are not adjusted.
3) Indicators related to employment in industry apply to the entire population of enterprises the principal (prevailing) activity of which is industry. The indicator of the registered number of employees does not include persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have contracts of employment. The piece of data on the registered number of employees in industry also excludes agency workers, who have contracts of employment within economic activities of services (CZ-NACE 78.2).
