Decline in construction output deepened

In September 2012 the construction output decreased by 10.6%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 11.4% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions decreased by 9.5%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings dropped by 25.5%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings increased by 4.6%, y-o-y.

In September 2012 the construction output decreased by 10.6%, y-o-y, in real terms. The working days adjusted construction output in September 2012 was by 8.2% lower, y-o-y. September 2012 was by two working days shorter compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in September 2012 was by 1.5% lower, month-on-month. The production in building construction decreased by 8.2% (contribution -5.6 percentage point (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 15.8% (contribution -5.0 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of September of this year dropped by 20.7% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 5.5%, y-o-y, in September 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 1.7%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 29 114.

In September 2012 the number of building permits granted dropped by 11.4%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 8 378 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 24.3 billion and fell by 9.5% compared to the same period of 2011.

In September 2012 the number of dwellings started dropped by 25.5%, y-o-y, and attained 1 857 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 52.3% and in family houses it dropped by 26.2%.

The number of completed dwellings increased by 4.6%, y-o-y, and was 2 059 dwellings in September 2012. The number of completed dwellings in family houses rose by 14.9% and that in multi-dwelling buildings dropped by 10.9%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 6.8%, y-o-y, in August 2012. Building construction fell by 6.9% and civil engineering construction dropped by 7.5%. Eurostat shall release the data for September 2012 on 19 November 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

Construction in Q3 2012

In Q3 2012 the construction output decreased by 5.7%, y-o-y, in real terms. The working days adjusted construction output in September 2012 was by 5.1% lower, y-o-y (Q3 2012 was by one working day shorter compared to the same period of the previous year). The building construction production decreased by 3.6% (contribution -2.5 p.p.) and the civil engineering construction production recorded a decline by 10.2% (contribution -3.2 p.p.), y-o-y.

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees dropped by 5.0%, y-o-y in Q3 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 3.4%, y-o-y and reached CZK 30 298.

In Q3 2012 the number of building orders of construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 4.6%, y-o-y; the enterprises received and concluded 11 762 orders in the Czech Republic. The total value of the orders dropped by 13.3%, y-o-y and was CZK 40.4 billion. The building construction orders were for CZK 21.6 billion (increase by 3.0%) and those for civil engineering constructions were for CZK 18.8 billion (decline by 26.6%). The average value of a newly concluded construction order in Q3 2012 was CZK 3.4 million and was by 9.1% lower, y-o-y.
By the end of Q3 2012 construction enterprises with 50+ employees had 12.1 thousand orders (drop by 9.7%) contracted and these orders represented the stock of so-far not implemented construction works at the total value of CZK 144.3 billion (decline by 13.1%).

In Q3 2012 the number of building permits granted went down by 9.2%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 25 770 building permits. The approximate value of these permitted new constructions was CZK 102.9 billion and rose by 31.3% compared to the same period of 2011. The growth was, first of all, caused by permits granted to constructions of large structures for energy and industry in August 2012.

The floor area of buildings permitted in Q3 2012 was 1 605.9 thousand m 2, which means a growth by 15.6% compared y-o-y. The floor area of permitted residential buildings decreased by 21.2%, and that of non-residential buildings jumped up by 68.4%, mostly due to permits granted to constructions of large logistic centres.

The number of dwellings started in Q3 2012 dropped by 19.6%, y-o-y, and attained the number of 5 710 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses dropped year-on-year by 18.6% and in multi-dwelling buildings it plummeted by 45.8%, y-o-y.

The number of completed dwellings increased by 4.4%, y-o-y, and reached 6 905 dwellings in Q3 2012. The number of completed dwellings in family houses increased by 7.6%, and the number of those in multi-dwelling buildings rose by 10.5%.

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
