Recession in housing construction continued

In October 2013 the construction output decreased by 1.0%, year-on-year (y-o-y). The planning and building control authorities granted by 22.6% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions decreased by 21.7%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings dropped by 34.4%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings was down by 16.5%, y-o-y.

In October 2013 the construction output decreased by 1.0%, y-o-y. If working days adjusted the construction output increased by 0.2%. October 2013 was by one working day shorter than the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in October 2013 was by 7.1% higher, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 0.3% (contribution -0.2 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 2.5% (contribution -0.8 p.p.), y-o-y. Compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom, the construction output dropped by 26.9% since the beginning of 2013 till the end of October 2013.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 8.5%, y-o-y, in October 2013. Their average gross monthly nominal wage decreased by 3.6%, compared year-on-year, and reached CZK 29 560.

In October 2013 the number of building permits granted decreased by 22.6%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 7 233 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 19.8 billion and dropped by 21.7% compared to the same period of 2012.

The number of dwellings started in October 2013 declined by 34.4%, y-o-y, and attained 1 533 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 59.4% and that of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 30.5%.

The number of completed dwellings decreased by 16.5%, y-o-y, in October 2013 and was 2 004 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings increased by 8.3%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 19.7%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU28 increased by 0.2%, y-o-y, in September 2013. Buildings increased by 1.1% and civil engineering works fell by 3.8%. According to the preliminary schedule Eurostat shall release the data for October 2013 on 18 December 2013 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
