Drop in construction production got even deeper

In May 2013 the construction output declined by 15.5%, year-on-year (y-o-y). The planning and building control authorities granted by 18.3% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions dropped by 28.7%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings was down 14.7%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings plummeted by 34.9%, y-o-y.

In May 2013 the construction output decreased by 15.5%, y-o-y. The seasonally adjusted construction output in May 2013 was by 2.4% lower, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 15.8% (contribution -10.9 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 14.7% (contribution -4.6 p.p.), y-o-y. Compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom, the construction output plummeted by 33.4% since the beginning of 2013 till the end of May 2013.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 8.5%, y-o-y, in May 2013. Their average monthly nominal wage kept at the same level of 2012, compared year-on-year, and reached CZK 28 988.

In May 2013 the number of building permits granted decreased by 18.3%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 7 318 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 19.9 billion and dropped by 28.7% compared to the same period of 2012.

The number of dwellings started in May 2013 decreased by 14.7%, y-o-y, and attained 1 880 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings decreased by 3.5% and that of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 11.7%.

The number of completed dwellings fell by 34.9%, y-o-y, in May 2013 and was 1 866 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 40.0%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses dropped by 19.8%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 5.9%, y-o-y, in April 2013. Buildings dropped by 5.2% and civil engineering works fell by 8.3%. Eurostat shall release the data for May 2013 on 17 July 2013 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
