In January 2014 the construction output increased by 5.0%, year-on-year (y-o-y) in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 27.3% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 21.7%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings jumped up by 32.6%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings was down by 23.7%, y-o-y.

In January 2014 the construction output increased by 5.0%, y-o-y in real terms. The seasonally adjusted construction output in January 2014 was by 1.5% lower, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction increased by 5.4% (contribution +4.3 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction grew by 3.2% (contribution +0.7 p.p.), y-o-y. The growth of the construction production was affected by favourable weather conditions (average temperature was by 3.3 °C higher than the long-term average and precipitation was by 38% below the long-term average) and also a low comparison basis of the last year (the figure for January 2013 was the lowest of data for January since 2000). Compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom, the construction output dropped by 36.1% in January 2014.

The average registered number of employees * ), in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 8.0%, y-o-y, in January 2014. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 5.0%, compared year-on-year, and reached CZK 27 647.

In January 2014 the number of building permits granted decreased by 27.3%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 5 119 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 19.9 billion and increased by 21.7% compared to the same period of 2013 (due to a very low comparison basis of the last year).

The number of dwellings started in January 2014 jumped up by 32.6%, y-o-y, and attained 1 978 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings soared six times and that of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 31.8%. The extreme year-on-year growth in the number of dwelling started in multi-dwelling buildings is a result of a very low comparison basis of the last year and simultaneously the issued building permit for the construction of large dwelling premises in Prague.

The number of completed dwellings decreased by 23.7%, y-o-y, in January 2014 and was 1 762 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 15.6%. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 51.8%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU28 increased by 0.8%, y-o-y, in December 2013. Buildings increased by 0.1% and civil engineering works grew by 2.3%. According to the preliminary schedule Eurostat shall release the data for January 2014 on 19 March 2014 (at 11:00 a.m.).

*) The registered number of employees indicator does not include persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises and cooperating household members, who do not have contracts of employment. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have contracts of employment, yet within activities of services (CZ-NACE 78.2) .
