Year-on-year decline in the construction output continued

In March 2012 the construction output dropped by 8.9%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 8.8% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions dropped by 25.9%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings went down by 6.2%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings fell by 19.8%, y-o-y.

In March 2012 the construction output decreased by 8.9%, y-o-y, in real terms; if seasonally adjusted it was lower by 7.7%. March 2012 was by one working day shorter compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in March 2012 was by 3.7% higher, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 3.4% (contribution -2.4 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 22.8% (contribution -6.5 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of March of this year plummeted by 34.4.% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees ) ) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 4.6%, y-o-y, in March 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 7.7%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 28 959.

In March 2012 the number of building permits granted decreased by 8.8%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 7 795 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 24.7 billion and dropped by 25.9% compared to the same period of 2011.

The number of dwellings started in March 2012 dropped by 6.2%, y-o-y, and attained 2 254 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 14.8% and in multi-dwelling buildings it soared by 55.3%, year-on-year.

The number of completed dwellings fell by 19.8%, y-o-y, and was 1 562 dwellings in March 2012. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 12.3%. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 48.1%.

Construction in Q1 2012

In Q1 2012 the construction output decreased by 10.2%, y-o-y, in real terms. The building construction production decreased by 5.8% (contribution -4.3 p.p.) and the civil engineering construction production recorded a decline by 22.8% (contribution -5.9 p.p.).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees dropped by 4.9%, y-o-y in Q1 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 6.3%, y-o-y and reached CZK 27 278.

In Q1 2012 the number of building orders of construction enterprises with 50+ employees declined by 13.7%, y-o-y; the enterprises received and concluded 7 599 orders in the Czech Republic. The total value of the orders plummeted by 51.1%, y-o-y and was CZK 24.5 billion. The building construction orders were for CZK 12.6 billion (drop by 42.7%) and those for civil engineering constructions were for CZK 11.9 billion (decline by 57.6%). The average value of a newly concluded construction order in Q1 2012 was CZK 3.2 million and was by 43.3% lower, y-o-y.
By the end of Q1 2012 construction enterprises with 50+ employees had 11.9 thousand orders (growth by 3.0%) contracted and these orders represented the stock of so-far not implemented construction works at the total value of CZK 135.6 billion (drop by 22.9%).

In Q1 2012 the number of building permits granted was down by 3.2%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 21 330 building permits. The approximate value of these permitted new constructions was CZK 69.7 billion and plummeted by 29.5% compared to the same period of 2011.

The floor area of buildings permitted in Q1 2012 was 1 314.9 thousand m 2, which means a growth by 7.4% compared y-o-y. The floor area of permitted residential buildings decreased by 7.0%, and that of non-residential buildings increased by 24.9%.

The number of dwellings started in Q1 2012 decreased by 2.6%, y-o-y, and attained the number of 6 545 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses dropped year-on-year by 12.9% and in multi-dwelling buildings it rose by 17.0%, y-o-y.

The number of completed dwellings increased by 1.9%, y-o-y, in Q1 2012 and reached 6 230 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 1.4%, and the number of those in multi-dwelling buildings rose by 18.4%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 9.4%, y-o-y, in February 2012. Building construction fell by 7.9% and civil engineering construction dropped by 15.9%. Eurostat shall release the data for March 2012 on 21 May 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
