Construction output decrease continued

The construction output decreased by 6.4%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in April. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 3.4% lower. The planning and building control authorities granted by 10.9% less building permits, y-o-y. The approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 14.1%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings decreased by 24.6%, y-o-y. The number of completed dwellings increased by 40.6%, y-o-y.

Construction output decreased by 3.4%, month-on-month. “In April, construction output accelerated its year-on-year decrease and was by 6.4% lower. Both segments contributed to the decrease,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The building construction output was by 5.3% lower. The civil engineering output dropped by 9.4%, year-on-year.

The planning and building control authorities granted 6 387 building permits; it was by 10.9% less, y-o-y. The approximate value of the permitted constructions reached CZK 53.9 billion and it increased by 14.1%, year-on-year.

The number of dwellings started decreased by 24.6%, y-o-y, and reached the number of 2 685 dwellings. The number of dwellings completed increased by 40.6%, y-o-y, and amounted to 4 264 dwellings.

The average registered number of employees in construction decreased by 1.5%, y-o-y. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 7.8%, y-o-y.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in March 2023 decreased by 1.2%, year-on-year. Building construction decreased by 1.2% and civil engineering decreased by 1.8%. “Construction output in the EU27 was basically stagnating in the Q1. The Czech Republic is slightly under the average of the EU with its performance, like Germany. On the other hand, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria have their output higher in the year-on-year comparison,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the CZSO, says. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for April 2023 on 20 June 2023.
