Construction output in 2022 increased by 1.9%

The construction output decreased by 0.2%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms, in December. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 1.2% higher. The planning and building control authorities granted by 15.6% less building permits, y-o-y. The approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 8.5%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings decreased by 21.9%, y-o-y. The number of completed dwellings increased by 31.6%, y-o-y.

“Construction output kept growing slightly in 2022 and increased in both segments the same by 1.9%. During the year, construction continued to cope with growth of prices and lack of construction capacities,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

Construction output was by 1.2% higher, month-on-month, in real terms. In the y-o-y comparison, it decreased by 0.2%. “In December, the total decrease of production was weakened by civil engineering construction, which increased by 8.2%, year-on-year. The production in building construction hit a higher comparison basis and decreased by 3.2%,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the CZSO, says.  

The planning and building control authorities granted 6 700 building permits; it was by 15.6% less, y-o-y. The approximate value of the permitted constructions reached CZK 51.2 billion and it increased by 8.5%, year-on-year, which was contributed to by granting building permits to large constructions of the transport infrastructure.

The number of started dwellings decreased by 21.9%, y-o-y, and reached the number of 3 597 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings increased by 31.6%, year-on-year, and amounted to 4 786 dwellings.

The average registered number of employees in construction increased by 0.9%, y-o-y. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 8.9%, y-o-y.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in November 2022 increased by 1.8%, year-on-year. Building construction increased by 1.6% and civil engineering by 2.8%. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for December 2022 on 20 February 2023.
