Construction output decreased in July

In July 2023, the construction output decreased by 2.1%, year-on-year (y-o-y). In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 3.8% lower. The planning and building control authorities granted by 9.1% less building permits, y-o-y. The approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 16.0%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings increased by 8.6%, y-o-y. The number of completed dwellings increased by 4.9%, y-o-y.

Construction output decreased by 3.8%, month-on-month. “After a promising result from June, construction output again got below the last year’s level in July when it decreased by 2.1%, year-on-year. The decrease occurred in both segments; building construction contributed more to it,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. Production in building construction decreased by 2.5% and civil engineering construction decreased by 1.3%, y-o-y.

The planning and building control authorities granted 6 294 building permits; it was by 9.1% less, y-o-y. The approximate value of permitted constructions reached CZK 40.3 billion and it increased by 16.0%, year-on-year.

The number of started dwellings increased by 8.6%, y-o-y, and amounted to 2 968 dwellings. “The number of started dwellings was increasing in July after seven months, namely thanks to dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings. Construction of dwellings started out of the Capital City of Prague, namely in the Středočeský Region and in the Jihočeský Region. Starting of construction of family houses continues to be in the doldrums,” Drahomíra Dušková of the Construction Statistics Unit of the CZSO explains. The number of completed dwellings increased by 4.9%, y-o-y, and amounted to 2 929 dwellings.   

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees increased by 1.7%, y-o-y. The average gross monthly nominal wage of those employees increased by 5.9%, y-o-y.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in June 2023 remained on the same level, year-on-year. Buildings decreased by 1.0% and civil engineering works increased by 4.6%. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for July 2023 on 20 September 2023.

The year-on-year development of construction output (production) has been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month rates have also been seasonally adjusted.
