Freezing February limited construction work

In February 2012 the construction output dropped by 16.0%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 4.9% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions plummeted by 49.9%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings went down by 11.9%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings fell by 2.2%, y-o-y.

In February 2012 the construction output decreased by 16.0%, y-o-y, in real terms; if seasonally adjusted it was lower by 17.2%. February 2012 was by one working day longer compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in February 2012 was by 2.4% down, m-o-m. The production in building construction decreased by 11.3% (contribution -8.4 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction plummeted by 30.2% (contribution -7.6 p.p.), y-o-y. The drop in the construction production was in part affected by extremely low temperatures (average temperature in February 2012 was by 4.1 °C lower compared to the long-term temperature average), which temporarily halted work activities on certain constructions.
From the beginning of the year till the end of February 2012 the construction output plummeted by 38.4% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1 ) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 4.6%, y-o-y, in February 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 4.8%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 26 346.

In February 2012 the number of building permits granted decreased by 4.9%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 6 774 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 21.0 billion and plummeted by 49.9% compared to the same period of 2011. This drop was in part affected by a high comparison base of February 2011.

The number of dwellings started in February 2012 dropped by 11.9%, y-o-y, and attained 1 845 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 46.6% and in family houses it rose by 12.6%, year-on-year.

The number of completed dwellings fell by 2.2%, y-o-y, in February 2012 and was 2 091 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 42.5%.The number of completed dwellings in family houses increased by 7.9%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 1.0%, y-o-y, in January 2012. Building construction shrunk by 0.8% and civil engineering construction decreased by 1.4%. Eurostat shall release the data for February 2012 on 18 April 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
