Year-on-year decline in construction production continued

In April 2013 the construction output declined by 11.4%, year-on-year (y-o-y). The planning and building control authorities granted by 14.8% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 7.2%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings was up by 18.5%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings jumped up by 27.7%, y-o-y.

In April 2013 the construction output decreased by 11.4%, y-o-y; if working days adjusted it was lower by 12.9%. April 2013 was by one working day longer compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in April 2013 was by 2.7% higher, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 8.3% (contribution -5.6 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 18.3% (contribution -5.8 p.p.), y-o-y. Compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom, the construction output plummeted by 37.0% since the beginning of 2013 till the end of April 2013.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 8.2%, y-o-y, in April 2013. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 7.9%, y-o-y, and reached CZK 30 758. The level of the average wages was affected by extraordinary bonuses paid, especially in large enterprises.

In April 2013 the number of building permits granted decreased by 14.8%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 7 005 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 25.3 billion and grew by 7.2% compared to the same period of 2012, first all, because of issued building permits for constructions of large transport infrastructure structures.

The number of dwellings started in April 2013 increased by 18.5%, y-o-y, and attained 2 208 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings increased more than three times and that of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 9.9%.

The number of completed dwellings jumped up by 27.7%, y-o-y, in April 2013 and was 1 916 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings increased almost twice. The number of completed dwellings in family houses grew by 11.6%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 7.2%, y-o-y, in March 2013. Buildings dropped by 6.8% and civil engineering works fell by 8.0%. Eurostat shall release the data for April 2013 on 19 June 2013 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
