Construction output slightly increased

In June 2023, the construction output increased by 1.0%, year-on-year (y-o-y). In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 2.5% higher. The planning and building control authorities granted by 8.7% less building permits, y-o-y. The approximate value of permitted constructions decreased by 15.2%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings decreased by 18.3%, y-o-y, the number of completed dwellings increased by 4.0%, y-o-y.

“In June, construction output increased by 2.5%, month-on-month. In the year-on-year comparison, after having decreased for several months, it increased by 1.0%. The growth took place in both civil engineering construction and building construction and a contribution of the segments to the overall growth was the same,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The production in building construction increased by 0.7%. The production in civil engineering construction increased by 1.6%, y-o-y.

The planning and building control authorities granted 6 759 building permits; it was by 8.7% less, y-o-y. “The approximate value of constructions permitted in June reached CZK 44 billion and it decreased by 15%, year-on-year. The decrease is to a considerable extent owing to a high comparison basis from June 2022 when construction of a large logistic centre was permitted,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the CZSO, says.

The number of started dwellings decreased by 18.3%, y-o-y, and amounted to 2 469 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings increased by 4.0%, y-o-y, and amounted to 2 469 dwellings.   

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees decreased by 0.4%, y-o-y. The average gross monthly nominal wage of those employees increased by 9.9%, y-o-y.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in May 2023 decreased by 0.4%, year-on-year. Buildings decreased by 0.9% and civil engineering works increased by 3.0%. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for June 2023 on 18 August 2023.
