A decrease of occupancy of the Czech Republic stopped in 2010

Q4 2010, the number of guests’ overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments increased by 3.4% year-on-year, of which non-residents by 6.0%, on the contrary residents went down by 0.1%. In total, more guests arrived by 4.4%, of which foreigners by 6.3% and residents by 2.0%. An average number of overnight stays went in the long term down.
During the whole year 2010, a decrease of occupancy stopped for the first time since the year 2008; collective accommodation establishments reported a higher number of overnight stays by 0.4% and the number of guest increased by 1.9% too.

The number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments totalled 6.9 million in Q4 2010; this was by 3.4% more than in the same period of the previous year. As for residents, there was a slight decrease by 0.1% in accommodation establishments; the number of nights of non-residents went up by 6.0% in this quarter compared to the same period of the previous year. A remarkable year-on-year growth was recorded in hotels, in particular in upper categories – five-star hotels by 17.7% and four-star hotels by 9.2%. In boarding houses, there was a decrease of the number of overnight stays by 11.4% there. From regional point of view, the highest increase was shown by accommodation establishments in Prague (by 9.8%), then in Jihomoravsky region (by 4.3%) and Olomoucky region (by 2.8%); in contrast the highest decrease was in Liberecky region (by 10.1%).

A total of 2.5 million guests arrived to observed establishments; this was 4.4% up on Q4 2009. The number of non-residents went up by 6.3%; and for the first time since Q3 2009 the number of residents increased too (by 2.0%). The highest growth in arrivals was in five-star and four-star hotels (by 16.4% and 12.3% respectively). From the regional point of view, the highest increase in the number of guests’ arrivals was recorded in Prague (by 9.3%) and regions Zlinsky (by 6.5%) and Olomoucky (by 6.3%). The highest decrease was shown in Ustecky region (by 5.3%). In spite of the fact that there was the highest number of foreign guests from Germany as usual (330 thousand); this was by 3.3% less year-on-year. In contrast guests from Russia arrived by 43.9% more and they formed the second group of foreign tourists in terms of the number (105 thousand). From top ten countries, from which the most foreign guests come, a remarkably high increase was shown by tourists from the USA (by 17.0%), Slovakia (by 15.2%) and France (by 13.5%); on contrary guests from Spain came by 13.6% less.

In spa accommodation establishments the number of guests totalled 157 thousand in Q4 2010; this was 2.4% up year-on-year. The number of residents went up by 6.1%; in contrast non-residents arrived by 1.2% less. The structure of the number of overnight stays went the other way round – there was a decrease of domestic visitors by 0.1%; in contrast there was an increase of foreign guests by 1.5%. In Karlovarsky region, which has the share more than half in total number of arrivals as well as overnight stays of spa establishments, the number of arrivals of residents increased by 15.5% and in contrast the number of non-residents went down by 0.8%.

Rooms of hotels and similar establishments were used from 38.9% in Q4 2010; this was by 3.3 p.p. more than in the same period of the previous year. Five-star hotels with the highest utilisation of 55.9% increased their usage by 7.3 p.p.; four-star hotels with utilisation of 50.1% by 2.8 p.p. A growth by 1.3 p.p. was shown by other hotels and boarding houses; nevertheless their utilisation of rooms was much lower (21.3%).

During the whole year 2010 compared to the previous year 2009, the total number of guests increased by 1.9% and the number of overnight stays by 0.4%. Foreign guests arrived by 5.0% more and their number of overnight stays went up by 3.5%; in contrast there were less domestic guests in collective accommodation establishments (by 1.3%) and their number of overnight stays decreased too (by 2.5%). An average number of overnight stays goes in the long term down, which became evident also in the year 2010 both as a whole and in the case of residents; only for non-residents the average number of overnight stays remained at the same level as in the year 2009.

From regional point of view, the number of guest in observed establishments went up the most in Prague (by 8.9%), where there were more domestic guests by 16.6% and non-residents by 7.8%; on contrary the highest drop in guest's arrivals was recorded in Ustecky region by 12.8%. Similar development was shown in the number of overnight stays – the highest year-on-year growth was in Prague (by 7.8%) and the deepest decrease was in Ustecky region (by 9.3%); a downturn was reported also in regions Vysocina (by 8.5%), Liberecky and Moravskoslezsky (both equally by 5.7%).




Methodological note:
1 ) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
