Tourists were attracted by luxury hotels

Q2 2011, the number of guests’ overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments increased by 7.2% year-on-year, of which foreign visitors by 15.2%, on the contrary the number of domestic guests decreased by 2.1%. In total, more guests arrived by 8.9%, of which domestic by 13.5% and foreign by 3.5%.

The number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments totalled 9.6 million in Q2 2011; this was by 7.2% more than in the same period of the previous year. Concerning non-residents the number of overnights increased by 15.2%, residents spent less nights by 2.1% compared to Q2 2010. Remarkable year-on-year growth was recorded by top category of hotels – five-star hotels by 18.0% and four-star hotels by 17.7%; in contrast boarding houses reported year-on-year decrease in overnight stays by 14.6%.

From regional point of view, the highest increase was shown by accommodation establishments in Prague by 17.3%, then in Stredocesky and Ustecky region (both by 8.2%). On the contrary, in Pardubicky region the number of overnight stays decreased the most from all regions by 8.8%; this was in particular due to small interest in overnights by domestic clients (a decrease by 10%).

A total of 3.4 million guests arrived in collective accommodation establishments; this was 8.9% up on Q2 2011. The number of non-residents increased by 13.5% and domestic guests arrived more by 3.4%. Arrivals have been going up already 3 quarters. Concerning a breakdown by the category of accommodation establishment, four-star hotels recorded a growth by 18.5% and five-star hotels by 14.5% There was year-on-year growth in the number of resident guests by 44.0% due to conference and incentive* ) tourism in the category of five-star hotels, however their share on total number (including non-residents) did not reached a level of 10 per cent. For the first time from the year 2000 more than 20 thousand residents arrived in luxury hotels in one quarter. Camp sites reported year-on-year increase by 2.0% in Q2; they were visited by more tourists (by 45.9%) in April due to a hot weather.

From the regional point of view, the highest number of arrivals of guests was shown, like in overnight stays, in Prague (by 13.7%), in Ustecky region (by 10.8%), in Stredocesky region (by 9.7%) and in Moravskoslezsky region (by 9.5%). Fewer guests came only to two regions – to Pardubicky by 6.6% and to Liberecky by 4.0%. The highest number of foreign guests (by country of origin) arrived as usually from Germany (395 thousand); this was by 9.4% up then last year. The second of the most numerous groups of foreign tourists were guests from Russia (158 thousand) with a year-on-year growth in arrivals by 50.9%. Among the first ten countries, from which foreign guests arrive the most often, a remarkable increase was also shown by guests from France (by 21.0%), and Spain (by 20.1%); on contrary there were fewer guests from the Great Britain (by 5.9%).

In spa accommodation establishments the number of guests totalled 193 thousand in Q2; this was 7.2% up year-on-year. The number of non-residents went up by 19.1% and domestic guests went down by 2.1%. There were 1.8 million overnight stays (decrease by 0.9%) of guests in spa accommodation establishments. A structure of the number of overnight stays was similar as in arrivals – non-residents spent more nights by 10.2% and residents fewer by 7.7%. In Karlovarsky Region, with the share more than half in occupancy of spa establishments, the number of overnight stays of foreign guests went up by 12.1% and domestic by 3.2%. The number of arrivals of non-residents went up by 8.4% and of residents went down by 6.0%.

Rooms of hotels and similar establishments were used from 47.2% in Q2 2011; this was by 5.2 p.p. more than in the same period of the previous year. Five-star hotels with the highest utilisation from all hotels (63.7%) increased their usage by 9.6 p.p.; an utilisation of four-star hotels increased by 6.3 p.p. to 60.8%. An increase three-star hotels (by 4.0 p.p) and other hotels and boarding houses (by 2.0 p.p.).



Methodological note:
1 ) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
