In the Q2 2023, 5.8 million guests in total accommodated in collective accommodation establishments of which 3.2 million were domestic guests and 2.5 million were guests from abroad. The number of overnight stays increased by 14.5% to 13.8 million nights.

The number of overnight stays of guests in collective accommodation establishments reached 13.8 million nights in the Q2 2023, which was by 14.5% more compared to the corresponding period of 2022. Guests from the Czech Republic (CR; residents) were prevailing; 44% of overnight stays were made by foreigners. The number of overnight stays of residents was by 12.1% higher compared to the Q2 2019 before the pandemic. Nevertheless, the number of overnight stays of non-residents still have not reached the results from 2019; it was by 15.0% lower in the surveyed period.

“In the reference period, 5.8 million guests in total arrived in collective accommodation establishments, which was by 14.3% more compared to the previous year. The number of domestic guests increased by 4% and by 31% more guests from abroad accommodated there compared to the last year,” Pavel Vančura, Director of the Trade, Transport, Services, Tourism, and Environmental Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), stated.

The segment of hotels, in which 71% of all guests accommodated, recorded an increase in the total number of guests to 4.1 million arrivals (by 17.1%). Arrivals in boarding houses accounted for 13% of the volume of the number of guests with a year-on-year increase by 9.3%. The start of the tourist season in camps brought 290 thousand arrivals. The number of guests in camps slightly decreased by 0.1% of accommodated guests compared to the previous year. The number of nights spent in camps was by 3.3% lower than last year because the interest of the domestic clientele in camps decreased. In terms of comparison of Regions, the number of guests increased in all Regions of Czechia. In the second quarter of 2023, the most visited Regions were, besides the Hl. m. Praha Region (i.e. Prague), the Jihomoravský Region and the Jihočeský Region, as usually. Year-on-year, the number of guests increased the most in the Karlovarský Region (+21.4%), in Prague (+19.7%), and also in the Olomoucký Region (+18.4%).

“Outputs of accommodation establishments in the second quarter of 2023 were already close to the results before the pandemic. The total number of accommodated guests was almost the same as in the year 2019. However, the number of overnight stays still have not reached fully the level from the period before the covid pandemic and stood at 98%,” Roman Mikula from the Tourism and Environmental Statistics Unit of the CZSO informed.

The highest number of foreign guests (non-residents; by citizenship) came to accommodate in collective accommodation establishments, as usually, from Germany. In the surveyed accommodation establishments, Germans still made a quarter of guests from abroad (637 thousand arrivals). The second most numerous group consisted of guests from Slovakia (237 thousand). Guests from Poland ranked third (212 thousand arrivals). The United States of America ranked 4th with 143 thousand arrivals. Lack of arrivals from Asian countries and the Russian Federation continued.

The total number of guests includes data concerning Ukrainian nationals who paid for their accommodation themselves. However, due to the war conflict in Ukraine, operators of accommodation establishments were not always able to distinguish whether their guests are tourists or refugees. Therefore, also persons who cannot be objectively considered tourism participants according to international recommendations might have been included in the number of guests.
