Over 57 million overnight stays in the Czech Republic in 2019

In the Q4 2019, the number of overnight stays of guests in collective accommodation establishments increased by 4.5%, year-on-year (y-o-y); the number of guests from the Czech Republic (CR) grew by 5.4% and the number of those from abroad increased by 3.8%. In total, by 4.1% more guests accommodated in that period. Demand among residents increased by 5.0% and as for non-residents it was by 3.4% higher.

For the whole year 2019, collective accommodation establishments reported growth in the numbers of arrivals of guests as well as of their overnight stays. Almost 22 million guests accommodated in collective accommodation establishments and spent there over 57 million nights.

The number of overnight stays of guests in collective accommodation establishments reached 11.3 million nights in total in the Q4 2019, i.e. by 4.5% more compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The number of overnight stays of guests from the Czech Republic increased by 5.4%. The number of overnight stays of guests from abroad increased by 3.8%. The number of overnight stays in hotels in total increased by 4.2%, y-o-y, and in boarding houses by 7.5%, y-o-y. As for the regional breakdown, accommodation establishments in all regions except for the Pardubický Region and the Vysočina Region reported an increase. The most successful were operators of accommodation establishments in the Královéhradecký Region where the number of nights spent increased by 9.1%, y-o-y.

In total, 4.7 million guests arrived to collective accommodation establishments during the surveyed period; it was 4.1% up, y-o-y. The number of guests from the Czech Republic (residents) increased by 5.0%, y-o-y; the number of guests from abroad (non-residents) grew by 3.4%. The highest number of guests accommodated in four-star hotels (1.8 million); it was by 5.8% more than in the preceding year. Three-star hotels had 1.4 million arrivals of tourists, which was an increase by 2.7%. Boarding houses reported a 6.1% increase and 452 thousand visits. In terms of regional comparison, the number of guests decreased only in the Pardubický Region (−0.8%). On the contrary, guests were very interested in accommodation in the Karlovarský Region (+13.2%) and in central Moravia in the Olomoucký Region (+12.0%).

As usually, the highest number of guests from abroad came from Germany. In surveyed collective accommodation establishments, 521 thousand of them accommodated, which was by 3.9% more compared to the Q4 2018. Germans were followed by guests from Slovakia (as for the number of guests coming to accommodation establishments in the CR); however, with 179 thousand arrivals it was by 2.3% less compared to 2018. As for the TOP10 countries, the number of guests from China and South Korea have been decreasing since the middle of the year.
 

Development in 2019

The number of guests accommodated in collective accommodation establishments reached almost 22.0 million in 2019. It was by 737 thousand more than in 2018, which was an increase by 3.5%. The numbers of guests have been increasing already for seven successive years. The number of domestic guests exceeded the number of foreign guests by 218 thousand. In the year-on-year comparison, the number of domestic guests in collective accommodation establishments increased by 4.4% and the number of foreign guests by 2.6%. In 2019, also the threshold of 57 million of overnight stays was surpassed and residents were also prevailing.

In almost all regions of the Czech Republic, both the number of guests as well as the number of overnight stays of guests increased, y-o-y. Only in the Vysočina Region, the number of overnight stays slightly decreased (−0.4%), because the interest of foreigners in that region dropped.

During the whole year 2019, by 272 thousand more foreign guests came to accommodate in the Czech Republic compared to 2018. However, the increment is by a half lower than in the period of 2017–2018. Germany remained to be the most important source country of guests; in total, 2 million guests came from there and accommodated in the CR (+2.2%) in 2019. Slovakia ranked second with 750 thousand arrivals (+2.6%) and Poland remained the third; 673 thousand guests came from there (+8.4%). On the contrary, for the whole year 2019, the number of guests from China and South Korea decreased.
