A. CULTURE
Statistical data presented in this Chapter refer to the activities of theatres, cinemas, musical ensembles, libraries, museums, galleries, observatories, planetariums, and the press. The data are acquired from departmental statistical reports of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and other information sources. Included in this Chapter are also data on zoological and botanical gardens reported by the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoological Gardens and the Union of Czech Botanical Gardens; and on caves reported by the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection. The data on university libraries are taken over from documents prepared by the Institute for Information on Education.

The State Statistical Service also uses outputs from departmental statistical information systems, which are processed by the National Information and Advisory Centre for Culture, Prague. The figures in the tables are either related to the end of year (e.g., numbers of theatres, cinemas, libraries, galleries) or they are annual aggregates (e.g., number of performances, attendance, published books). Data on radio and television broadcasting are collected via state statistical questionnaires.

The figures on state establishments also include figures on establishments of municipalities and regions. The establishments founded outside the Ministry of Culture of the CR include establishments founded by central authorities of other ministries, by churches, civic associations and other entities.

The data from the area of audiovisual statistics are taken over from sources of the Czech Telecommunication Office, the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting, and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Notes on tables

Tables 22-1 and 22-2. State and private theatres

The network of theatres is measured by the indicator "Theatres in permanent operation"; one theatre administration (administrative unit) can control several theatres. Theatre buildings and halls, which are used by regional theatres as tour stages only and which are not directly administered by a theatre, are excluded.

Table 22-3. Musical ensembles

The figures refer to musical ensembles playing classical music: large symphony orchestras and choirs, chamber orchestras and chamber ensembles established by the Ministry of Culture of the CR, regions, towns, civic associations, generally beneficial companies, and entrepreneurs.

Table 22-4. Museums and galleries (museums of fine arts)

Museums, monuments and galleries with collections (museums of fine arts) are the subject of statistical survey.

Table 22-6. Historical monuments

The figures refer to castles, churches, ruins, mills, towers, etc. accessible to public for admission fees.

Tables 22-8 to 22-10. Libraries

For all the types of libraries, the indicator "Loans, total" refers to loans of all library stock units (books, periodicals and other documents) used in and outside the library. A library stock unit is each separate volume of a book, a complete volume or several issues of a periodical bound or inserted in a folder, each separate map, graphic sheet, record, etc. Other documents include, for instance, magnetic tapes, microfilm rolls, photocopies, microfiches and the like. On 1 January 2002, the running of the state scientific libraries was passed from the Ministry of Culture of the CR to the administrative regions, and these libraries have been run as regional scientific libraries since. The National Library and the Moravian Land Library are still run by the Ministry of Culture of the CR and the data on these libraries are shown together with the data on the regional libraries.

Table 22-13. Newspapers, magazines (periodicals) and books

The data are measured according to obligatory copies received by the National Library in Prague.

Table 22-15. Production and distribution of films for cinemas

The data are provided by the National Information and Advisory Centre for Culture, coming under the Ministry of Culture of the CR, which sends its questionnaires to main producers and distributors in the market. The enterprises engaged in production or distribution of films are active film producers or distributors.

Feature films (incl. animated films) are films taking at least 60 minutes.

Short films (e.g. games, documents, animated films, incl. films of medium length) are films taking less than 60 minutes.

Tables 22-18 to 22-21. Radio and television broadcasting and operators

The figures on the number of licences for the operation of radio or television broadcasting are provided by the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting and refer any form of transmission - terrestrial, cable and satellite broadcasting. In 2002, Act No. 231/2001 Coll., on the Operation of Radio and Television Broadcasting newly defined the concept ‘television station’ and this has been in force since.

The figures published in the tables are comparable with the figures published in the statistical yearbooks of previous years.
