INFORMATION SOCIETY IN FIGURES 2009

Today, the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) published on its website a brochure: Information Society in Figures 2009 .

The indicators presented in this brochure give evidence to the information society situation in the Czech Republic and in the countries of the European Union. The aim of this brochure is to give a basic overview of the state of and developments in the spreading and manner of use of ICTs in the main areas of our society.

The data contained in this publication originates from official surveys conducted by the CZSO as well as from the statistics of the Czech Telecommunication Office, the Institute of Health Information and Statistics and the Institute for Information in Education. The international data come from the data sources of Eurostat, the OECD and ITU.

Selected observations gained from the individual chapters:
  • In 2008, there was a total of 13.5 million mobile phone subscribers in the Czech Republic, i.e. one of the highest values per one hundred inhabitants in the EU. In this same year, there was a total of 1.9 million broadband connections in the Czech Republic (which is 1.2 million more than in 2005).
  • In 2008, almost 48 % households in the Czech Republic was equipped with a personal computer and 42 % had the Internet access at home, with 33 % of households having a broadband connection. A total of 67 % of households with dependent children had the Internet, but a mere 27 % of households without children enjoyed this benefit.
  • In 2008, the Internet was used by 54 % of individuals over 16 years of age (in 2003 this value was 28 %), with half of these individuals use the Internet almost every day. The place where Internet users use the Internet most is at home (84 %), followed by at work (39 %) and at school (17 %). The Internet is most popular among students (97 % of students are Internet users), young people between 16 and 24 years of age (90 %) and tertiary educated individuals (85 %).
  • The percentage of enterprises with an Internet connection has not changed in the Czech Republic in the last three years, still at 95 %. However, with the passing of the years there has been a marked change in the way employed by users to connect to the Internet. In January 2008, 79 % of enterprises were connected to the Internet using a broadband connection.
  • An ever greater number of public administration organisations give the public access to information, e.g. via an information kiosk, access to the Internet at the organisation’s premises or via free wireless Internet (WIFI), with this last option being offered by 11 % of all municipalities in 2007.
  • Whereas in 2005 there was just under nine computers at Czech schools for every 100 students, with 7.4 computers with the Internet connection, three years later, in 2008, this number had risen to 11.6 computers and 10.8 computers with the Internet connection.
  • In the Czech Republic only 11 % of independent doctors’ surgeries have a website. An on-line form can be used to make an appointment at 5 % of specialist doctors, 4.8 % of gynaecologists and slightly less than 2 % of dentists.
