Population change - 1st quarter of 2011

Further decrease of natality

The population of the Czech Republic increased by 3.0 thousand to 10 535.8 thousand during the first quarter of 2011. The whole increase resulted from a positive balance of international migration, by the natural movement the population was reduced by 0.7 thousand. The number of live births was 26.7 thousand during the period January-March, by 2.2 thousand less than in the same period of the previous year. The number of deaths was by 0.3 thousand lower, the number of marriages and divorces also decreased.

Published data result from a processing of individual statistical notifications of demographic events in the first quarter of 2011. The number of inhabitants is a result of an intercensal balance, which followed the 2001 population census; the current processing census 2011 will be a basis for population balance for the next 10-year period. Further, the census will provide more extra data about population as of 26 March 2011 that cannot be found by annual statistics. On the contrary, the population census cannot provide a data basis for an analysis of demographic processes as not as population forecasts.

The number of live born children was 26.7 thousand in the first quarter of 2011. It was by 2.2 thousand less than a year before; the lower numbers were recorded in all of three months. In 2010 only the first order children decreased, the number of second and third order children slightly increased. In the first quarter of 2011 there was less first order children (by 873) so as second order (by 872) and third order (by 341) children in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. The decrease was most markedly in the third order (by 11.1 %) and second order (by 7.8 %). The number of first order children went down by 6.5 %. The share of live births born outside marriage was continuously increasing; it went from 39.9 % in the first quarter of 2010 to 41.7 %. Half of first order children were born to single mother. The most children were born to women aged 30-32 years during the January-March period; women at the age of 28 dominated among primipara. The number of children with other than Czech citizenship was 691 in the first quarter, whereas it was 807 a year ago.

The number of deaths was 27.4 thousand in the first quarter of 2011, by 0.3 thousand lower than in the same period of the previous year. The average age of a deceased was 74.5 years (70.9 for men, 78.2 for women). From January to March there deceased 68 children before 1 year of age; the infant mortality rate counts among the lowest all over the world. Per 10 thousand live births, a total of 26 infants died before reaching the age of 1; it was 30 infants in the first quarter of 2010. The structure of all deceased by causes of death does not change significantly. Half of deaths was caused by diseases of the circulatory system (13.7 thousand), a total of 6.8 thousand of deceased died due to neoplasms and a total of 1.8 thousand due to diseases of the respiratory system.

In the first quarter of 2011 only 3.2 thousand marriages were entered into, by 0.5 thousand down on a January-March period of 2010. The decrease of nuptiality rate is long-term and moreover, large generations of 1970s have crossed the age of high nuptiality. The number of marriages was lower both in the case of marriages of two single persons (which made a 48 % part) and the re-marriages. The average age of a single groom was 31.8 years and the average age of a single bride was 29.0 years.

The decrease in the number of divorces in the first quarter of 2011 should not be magnified. Besides a possible decrease of divorce intensity, which is slightly under 50 % in the long run, it was rather a consequence of an irregular termination of divorces and its registration. The highest divorce rates were at 2-5 years after wedding. A total of 55.4 % of divorcees had minor children.

A total of 10.3 thousand abortions were registered in the first quarter of 2011, the number of induced abortion was 6.4 thousand, more or less same number than a year before. The number of spontaneous abortions increased by 130. A total of 3.0 thousand single women and 2.4 thousand married women underwent the induced abortion.

According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic the international migration added up a total of 3.8 thousand inhabitants during the first three months of 2011, which was by 1.6 thousand more than in the same period of 2010. The number of emigrants decreased by 5.4 thousand, whereas the number of immigrants by 3.8 thousand only. Among immigrants the citizens of Slovak (763 persons), Czech (554 persons), United States (520 persons), Ukraine (442 persons) and Russia (441 persons) dominated. The emigrants were mostly people with citizenship of Czech (638 persons), Slovak (227 persons) and United Kingdom (111 persons). According to the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy of the Ministry of the Interior http://www.mvcr.cz/clanek/cizinci-s-povolenym-pobytem.aspx a total of 425,167 foreigners with permitted stay lived in the Czech Republic as of 31 March 2011, and comprised 4.0 % of total population.

Since 1 ^st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data also contain information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
