The population of the Czech Republic increased by 7.8 thousand to 10 513.2 thousand during the first three quarters of 2012. The increase resulted not only from a positive balance of international migration (6.2 thousand persons), but also from the natural change, when the population was increased by 1.6 thousand. The number of live births was by 1.7 thousand lower as against the same period of 2011. The number of deaths was by 0.9 thousand higher. The number of marriages remained at the same number like in the first nine months of 2011. The number of divorces sharply declined (by 1.6 thousand), and abortions decreased too (by 1.0 thousand).

From January to September 2012 a total of 81.8 thousand children were born alive in the Czech Republic, which was by 1.7 thousand less than a year before. The number of children decreased at all birth-orders. There were less especially first order children (by 747) so as second order (by 547) and third and higher order too (by 422) in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. The decrease was most marked in the third and higher order (by 3.5%). The share of children born to unmarried woman further increased, by 1.6 percentage point to 43.1%. The highest share of children born outside marriage was at first order children (54.4%). Preliminary data indicate the slight increase in total fertility rate. The estimate for the period of 1st to 3rd quarter is 1.46, i.e. 0.02 children per woman more than in the same period of 2011.

The number of deaths registered in January to September 2012 was 80.2 thousand, which was 0.9 thousand more than in the same period of 2011. For 49.2% of deaths the underlying cause of death was from the group of the circulatory system diseases, for 25.5% deaths in the 1st to 3rd quarter a neoplasm was determined as the cause of death. Deaths from respiratory diseases accounted for 5.4% of deaths as well as external causes. Children died before reaching one year of age were 214 and infant mortality rate was at 26 infant deaths per 10,000 live births.

A total of 38.5 thousand of marriages were entered into in January to September. Number of marriages remained at the same level as in the same period of the year 2011. It was the 1st marriage for 76.4% of grooms and 77.6% of brides. More than two thirds (67.8% i.e. by 1.3 percentage point higher than previous year), it was the 1st marriage for both engaged.

In first nine months of 2012 a total of 19.0 thousand marriages were divorced, which was 1.6 thousand less than in the same period of 2011. The trend from previous year was continuing. The decline in total divorce rate was continuing also (preliminary figure for the first three quarters 2012 is 43%). The highest divorce rates were at 3-5 years after wedding. The share of divorcees with minor children increased year-to-year by 1.3 percentage point to 57.9%.
In the first three quarters of 2012, a total of 28.3 thousand abortions were registered, nearly by 1.0 thousand less than in the comparable period of the previous year, as a consequence of the reduction in the number of interruptions to 17.4 thousand (nearly by 0.9 thousand less than in the same period of 2011).

The international migration added up a total of 6.2 thousand persons during the three quarters of 2012, which was by 7.7 thousand less than in the same period of 2011. The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Slovakia (2.8 thousand people) followed by citizens of Germany (0.8 thousand persons) and United states (0.7 thousand persons). The number of immigrants increased by 3.4 thousand to 22.0 thousand and the number of emigrants increased by 11.1 thousand to 15.8 thousand.

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data also contain information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
Since July 2012 the source for migration data of foreigners is Alien Information System administrated by Directorate of Alien Police. It the previous periods source for migration data of foreigners was Information System of Inhabitants Record administered by the Ministry of Interior.
All data for 2012 are preliminary. Figures on population from 01/01/2011 are recalculated according to the Population Census 2011 definitive results.
