The population of the Czech Republic decreased by 3.2 thousand to 10 512.9 thousand during the first half-year of 2013. The decrease resulted from negative balance of the natural change, net migration was positive. The number of live births was 1.6 thousand lower compared with the same period in 2012, the number of marriages (by 2.0 thousand) and abortions (by 0.6 thousand) also decreased. The number of emigrants (by 12.1 thousand), immigrants (by 6.9 thousand), divorces (by 1.3 thousand) and deaths (by 0.2 thousand) increased.

From January to June 2013 a total of 52.0 thousand children were live born in the Czech Republic, which was 1.6 thousand less than a year before. Lower numbers of first order children (by 796, i.e. 3.2%) and second order children (by 969, i.e. 4.6%) stood behind the intra-annual decrease in total live births in the first half-year of 2013 in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. The number of children born in third or higher order was to the contrary higher (by 128, i.e. 1.7%). In relation to the figure of the first half-year of 2012 the share of children born to unmarried woman increased further, when 44.7% of all live births were born outside marriage in the first half-year of 2013, a total of 23.2 thousand. In the first half-year of this year, the most of children were born to women aged 29–31, from the first children to women at the age of 27–30. The a verage number of live births per woman in the first half-year, according to current calculation, fell to 1.42, i.e. three-hundredths lower than total fertility rate in 2012.

There were 55.8 thousand of deaths from January to June of 2013, 0.2 thousand less than in the same period of 2012. The average age of deceased males, those were only 33 more than deaths of females, was 71.8 years, women were on average 7 years older. The number of deaths of children aged less than one year was 125 and infant mortality rate was at 24 infant deaths per 10 000 live births in the first half-year of 2013. It means, that infant mortality rate continued to decline, when its level in 2012 was historically the lowest.

A total of 16.6 thousand of marriages were entered into in the first half-year of 2013, down by 2.0 thousand from the year before. The numbers of marriages have been annually decreasing since their temporary increase in 2007, and except to long-term decline in nuptiality, the fact that the large generations born in the 70s’ have already exceeded the age of higher marriage rate is also the reason. In the first half of 2013 compared to the same period a year earlier, the number of marriages between two single persons, which was 65.1%, and re-marriages were lower. Grooms, who entered into the first marriage this year, were on average 31.7 years, those for whom it was remarriage, 47.1 years. Single brides were on average 29.0 years, divorced and widowed 42.9 years.

In the first six months of 2013 a total of 14.2 thousand marriages were divorced, which was 1.3 thousand more than in the same period of previous year. The highest numbers of divorces were at 4–5 years after marriage. A total of 56.5% of divorcees had minor children; divorces have touched 12.3 thousand of minors.

In the first half-year of 2013, a total of 18.8 thousand abortions were registered, 0.6 thousand fewer than in the comparable period of the previous year, as a consequence of the reduction in the number of induced abortions (by 500) and lower number of spontaneous abortions (by 169).

Although the population overall decreased in the first half-year of 2013, net migration was positive, albeit low. The number of immigrants exceeded the number of emigrants only by 0.6 thousand persons. Net migration was 5.3 thousand lower than a year earlier. Compared with the same period of 2012, there were more immigrants (by 6.9 thousand) and especially emigrants (by 12.1 thousand). In the first half-year of 2013, the highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Slovakia (net migration at 2.2 thousand), Germany (0.9 thousand) and Bulgaria (0.4 thousand). The most significant decrease was registered with Ukrainians (3.2 thousand).
