The decline in births set back

In 2012, the population of the Czech Republic increased by 10.7 thousand to 10 516.1 thousand persons. The number of births exceeded the number of deaths only by 0.4 thousand persons and the number of immigrants exceeded the number of emigrants by 10.3 thousand persons. The number of divorces was lower (by 1.7 thousand) as well as the number of abortions (by 1.1 thousand) than in 2011. The numbers of live-born children and of marriages were comparable to the figure of 2011. The numbers of deaths were higher (by 1.3 thousand), immigrants (by 7.7 thousand) as well as emigrants (by 14.3 thousand) than 2011.

In 2012, 108.6 thousand children were live-born in the Czech Republic, which only by 97 down on a year before. The number of first-born children was 51.5 thousand (47% of live-born children), second born children was 41.8 thousand (39%) and 15.3 thousand (14%) was born in third or higher order. While the number of first-born children increased (by 487), the number of children born in second or higher order decreased. Preliminary data indicate slightly increase of total fertility rate (an average number of live-born children to a woman) from 1.43 in 2011 to the level of 1.45 children per woman. By one tenth of the year, to 29.8 year, the average age of mothers at childbirth has increased. The highest fertility was at the age 28-31, women at the age of 27-30 dominated among primiparae. The share of children born to unmarried woman further increased, by 1.6 percentage point to 43.4%. The highest share of children born outside marriage was at first order children (54.5%). A total of 3.3 thousand (by 0.3 thousand more than previous year) children with other than Czech citizenship, i.e. both of parents had other than Czech citizenship, were born in last year.

During the year 2012 there were 108.2 thousand of deaths, which was by 1.3 thousand more than in 2011. The male life expectancy at birth climbed up by three tenths of the year to 75.0 years, female life expectancy increased by two tenths of the year to 80.9 years. The number of infant deaths was lower than 2011 (285 as compared to 298 in 2011). Per 10 thousand live births, a total of 26 infants died before reaching the age of 1. The infant mortality rate was lower than ever before and is one of the lowest all over the world.

A total of 45.2 thousand marriages were entered into during the year 2012 increased – only by 69 more than a previous year. The nuptiality of divorcees was last year lower than in 2011. According to the preliminary data further marriage would now enter into 36% of divorced men and 35% of divorced women. The highest numbers of marriages were again in June (9.1 thousand) and unlike 2011 in September (7.8 thousand) and August (6.8 thousand). A total of 1 663 men and 2 344 women with Czech citizenship got married to foreign citizen: men mostly with women from Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia; women mostly with men from Slovakia, the United Kingdom and Germany.

A total of 26.4 thousand of marriages got divorced in 2012, which was by 1.7 thousand less than in 2011. The share of marriages ended in divorce further decreased from 46.2% in 2011 to 44.5% in 2012. The average duration of marriage was 12.8 years. The highest divorce rates were at 3rd-5th years of existence of marriage. A woman was a plaintiff for divorce by two-thirds. A total of 57.5% of divorcees had minor children. During 2011 a total of 23.0 thousand children went through the loss of one parent by divorce.

A total of 37.7 thousand abortions were registered in 2012, by 1.1 thousand down on a year before. The number of spontaneous abortions decreased (by 122) as well induced abortions (by 1 023). The share of pregnancies ended by induced abortion was 15.7%, by spontaneous abortion 9.2%. The level of total and induced abortion rate slightly decreased (from 0.52 to 0.50 total abortion per woman, respectively from 0.32 to 0.31 induced abortion per woman).

The number of inhabitants of the Czech Republic was in 2012 added up by 10.3 thousand due to international migration, which was by 6.6 thousand less than in 2011. Compared to previous year the number of immigrants and emigrants went up in 2012. A total of 30.3 thousand immigrants came to the Czech Republic. The most frequent were immigrants from Ukraine (5.9 thousand), Slovakia (4.8 thousand) and Russia (3.2 thousand). A total of 20.0 thousand people moved out of the Czech Republic, mostly from Ukraine (7.7 thousand), Czech Republic (3.3 thousand) and Viet Nam (1.7 thousand).

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data also contain information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
Since July 2012 the source for migration data of foreigners is Alien Information System administrated by Directorate of Alien Police. It the previous periods source for migration data of foreigners was Information System of Inhabitants Record administered by the Ministry of Interior.
All data for 2012 are preliminary. Figures on population from 01/01/2011 are recalculated according to the Population Census 2011 definitive results.
