Regional Statistics We witness the integration process of European countries and also expanding co-ooperation of regions and cities. To assist the process of regional development and gradual balancing of regional disparities, various statistical sources have been generated. One of the key roles of the regional statistics is to find adequate and objective methods for assessment of regional development and therefore to back up the effectiveness of regional politics. This means to respond the following challenges: · What is an objective criterion for assessment of development achieved in regions – is this the regional GDP, do exist other suitable and aggregate criteria? · How the regional statistics reflect new territorial issues – administrative reforms, formation of Euroregions and other clusters of municipalities, problems of large cities and their agglomerations; increasing data demand for atypical territorial units. · What are the ways for effective utilisation of wide data sources outside national statistical offices – e.g. standardisation, shared databases and internet portals. Successful solution of these questions would be an important investment of regional statistics in the future development of regions.
