National Accounts

The main task of national accounting is to provide the most comprehensive and detailed description of economic development and economic level of regions, countries and their groupings including mutual comparison across the space and time. Economic and social development is constantly bringing up new technological and economic knowledge and notions and subsequently the need for a re-assessment of some current views and approaches. It is closely connected with changing requirements as regards the extent, structure, timeliness and quality of relevant economic and social information. In this situation the national accounting cannot remain unflexible system but should be able to meet the above requirements. International institutions responsible for development of national accounting are fully aware of this challenge and have initiated the work on the revision of the basic worldwide standard – SNA 1993 with the aim to introduce revised SNA in 2008, fully reflecting new needs and requirements. The work of this Section may provide opportunity to discuss these issues.
