Invitation

Dear Friends of Statistics and Sports:

I am delighted to invite you to the city of Liberec, a beautiful university city in the north of Bohemia, just in the year which was declared the International Year of Statistics.

Owing to our colleagues from the Netherlands, who launched the tradition of volleyball tournaments of European statisticians many years ago, we can welcome 24th tournament on 13 – 15 September 2013 in the very heart of Europe.

For several tens of years the Czech children have been brought up by an extraordinary popular television fairy tale which theme song is called “Statistics is boring”. Thus statistics can be a very boring field in eyes of many since a tender age. People, however, just do not often realise through which all sorts of things statistics is beneficial to them and that they encounter statistics in their common daily life almost every day. In 2013 the Czech Statistical Office prepares, as in previous years, numerous activities, which shall bring public interest in statistics to a higher level. So the volleyball tournament may play a role of an interesting supplement to them. Because a boring statistician would never organise such a tournament, which awaits you in the Czech Republic!

I strongly believe I will be able to welcome you in the city of Liberec in autumn 2013 and wish you nice experiences with sports, culture, and meetings in a pleasant circle of colleague statisticians!
