Sample Survey on ICT Usage in Households and by Individuals (abbreviated “VŠIT” in Czech)

Czechia got connected to the world wide web for the first time in February 1992. It happened at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The Internet usage spread very fast from the academic world to our jobs and private lives and became a unique society-wide phenomenon. In 2023, 86% of individuals aged 16+ years used the Internet in the Czech Republic, which was more than 7.3 million people. How do we know that? Because it was you who told us so!

About the survey

What we are interested in is not just to what extent citizens of Czechia use the Internet but also, for example, how many of them have a mobile phone, what ICT skills they have, what they are searching for on the Internet, how often they are purchasing online and also whether they do not underestimate internet security.

We ask these questions by means of an annual sample survey on ICT usage in households and by individuals. The survey is not limited just to Czechia, statisticians measure these data in all countries of the EU, by which data comparability across the EU is ensured. So far, the last survey for which we have the results took place in the 2nd quarter of 2023. The questionnaire was filled out by 5,959 people aged 16 and over from 3,965 households.

What do the results serve for?

Data obtained within the sample survey on ICT usage in households and by individuals serve as a basis for both national and international policy-making, e.g. to determine main challenges and objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe and, most of all, for monitoring of how they are implemented in the EU. Since the area of information technologies is permanently and dynamically developing, it is necessary to carry out surveys in all EU Member States every year. Thanks to that, it is possible to observe trends in digital literacy of the population and in ICT usage in general on an ongoing basis. Every year, the survey questionnaire is modified in order to capture current changes such as the arrival of new technologies. Concurrently, emphasis is put on obtaining important indicators in a time series.

How does the survey take place?

The data collection is coordinated in relation to the Labour Force Sample Survey (LFSS).  An interviewer you already cooperate with on the LFSS survey will make an appointment with you (during the interview or in the period after the interview) in order to complete the questionnaire for the sample survey on ICT usage in households and by individuals. For every member of a household aged 16+ years one questionnaire with simple questions is prepared.

Where can you find the survey results?

Summary data from the sample survey on ICT usage in households and by individuals are intended not only for statisticians or politicians. Everybody can get acquainted with them - on web pages of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO). Results for the year 2023 can be found here: https://www.czso.cz/csu/czso/domacnosti_a_jednotlivci (Czech only).

Results for the year 2024 will be available by the end of November 2024.
