Adult Education Survey (AES)

21 percent of adult females and 23 percent of adult males in Czechia did not speak any foreign language in 2022; 51 percent of fellow citizens can speak English and 31 percent German. How do we know that? Because it was you who told us so!

About the survey

The Adult Education Survey (AES) ascertains not only knowledge of languages of the Czech population but also, for example, what courses they attend. It is a pan-European statistical survey, which allows comparing of data across all countries of the European Union and several other countries. It was carried out for the first time in 2007 and for the last time in 2022. In Czechia, the surveys are prepared by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO). During the survey, interviewers of the CZSO visited households all over the country. The main objective of the 2022 AES is to find out how the Czech adult population was being educated during the last year.

We were interested in your possible participation in classical school education (i.e. formal one), in various courses, classes, and trainings (in the so-called informal learning), but also your self-study at home via the Internet or by means of reading educational literature. Especially data on participation in informal learning cannot be obtained in another way than by means of this sample survey. We also asked you whether information about possibilities to study were provided to you during the last year or whether you speak some foreign languages.

What do the results serve for?

Results of the survey are necessary for experts who create both national and international concepts of education policies and they also serve for checking how their main objectives are complied with. They help uncover the biggest obstacles our fellow citizens face in terms of access to better education such as, for example, in case of computer courses, the lack of time, the price, which is too high, inaccessibility in the immediate vicinity, and low offer. Statisticians in other Member States of the EU ask the population the same questions, which allows to compare the results easily and thus to obtain an overview of participation of the Czech population in education in a wider context.

How does the survey take place?

The data collection took place in Czechia in the second half of 2022 and was coordinated with the Labour Force Sample Survey (LFSS).

Where can you find the survey results?

Summary data obtained from the AES are not determined just for statisticians or politicians. Anybody may get acquainted with them on the web pages of the CZSO, namely in the publication called in Czech Vzdělávání dospělých v České republice (Outcomes from the 2022 Adult Education Survey; Czech only). Basic results from the AES – 2022 have been published in the Statistical Yearbook of the Czech Republic – 2023 (in the end of the Chapter 24) and in the publication called Focus on Women and Men – 2023 (in the chapter called Results of Researches).

Data confidentiality and protection

Information that you tell the interviewer is strictly anonymous. The CZSO fully respects the European legal framework for personal data protection (GDPR) and acts in compliance with it. Moreover, all employees of the CZSO are sworn to secrecy about all surveyed facts pursuant to the Act No 89/1995 Sb, on the State Statistical Service. No piece of information that would identify interviewed respondents enters the processing itself. Information from the survey is published solely in the form of statistical summaries.
