Correct! Wrong!

The Czech Republic became a member of the European Union on 1 May 2004 together with nine other countries. It was the biggest EU enlargement so far.

Each EU member state presides over the Council of the EU approximately every 13.5 years. This Presidency rotates among the EU Member States every six months, during which the Presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council. Since 2009, Member States holding the Presidency have cooperated closely in groups of three as the so-called Trios. The Czech Republic is currently in the Trio together with France and Sweden.

More information about the mechanism of the rotating Presidency can be found here: https://www.consilium.europa.eu/cs/council-eu/presidency-council-eu/

During the Presidency, the Czech Statistical Office presides over the meetings of the Council Pracovní skupiny pro statistiku. This is a cross-sectional body of the Council of the EU which deals with all issues related to statistics. The WP cooperates closely with the European Commission and it also consults the European Parliament on proposals for new legislation.

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union and is part of the European Commission. It coordinates statistical activities at Union level, cooperates with National Statistical Institutes and provides high quality statistics and data on Europe.

There is also the United Nations Statistical Commission established in 1947, which is the highest body of the global statistical system.

We are currently not aware of any club of European statisticians. But it may be a good idea, don’t you think? 🙂

Interesting facts:

It is the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute which evaluates the level of air pollution in the Czech Republic. The basis for their evaluation is the so-called emission inventory which is a combined approach involving the direct collection of data from pollution source operators, and data obtained by model calculations from data reported by the source operators or as part of statistical surveys conducted primarily by the CZSO.

Interesting facts:

According to the information from an annual publication Česko v číslech (Czechia in Figures), the general unemployment rate in the Czech Republic was 2.6%, the lowest of all EU Member States. By comparison, the EU average at the time was 7%. From a long-term perspective, the year 2019 was exceptional in employment and unemployment statistics. In this year, there was an unprecedented decline in unemployment on one hand, and a mirror increase in the number of job vacancies on the other.

Interesting facts:

One of the factors for such a high volume of exports is the significant increase in logging in recent years. In 2019, 32.6 mil.m3 of wood without bark was harvested, which was a record amount at the time. Almost all logging consisted of the so-called incidental logging which mainly processes trees and quarries affected by bark beetle, which has decimated Czech forests in the last several years.

Rozhodně to nevzdávejte! 🙂

Thank you for completing the quiz.
Try again? 🙂
