4 October 2020

The Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) finished processing of results of elections to regional councils and the first round of elections to the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. In 13 Regions, voters elected 675 regional councillors; in one of the 27 electoral districts, they elected a senator. Despite demandingness of the processing caused by unfavourable epidemiological situation and adopted hygiene measures, statisticians have not recorded any substantial issues.

In the regional council elections, 9 711 candidates were standing in the election. The ANO movement won the highest number of seats, 178 of the total number of 675. The turnout was 37.95%; four years before, 34.57% of voters cast their votes in the regional council elections.

The average age of elected councillors is 48.31 years. The oldest councillor is 75 years old. Five councillors are the youngest; they are 22 years old. In regional councils, 77.93% men and 22.07% women will have a seat.

Voters could give preferential votes in the regional council elections. The highest number of preferential votes was won by Martin Kupka (13 434) and Vít Rakušan (12 243) in the Středočeský Region and by Jan Grolich (12 172) in the Jihomoravský Region.

In senatorial elections, there were 235 candidates for the 27 seats contested. Already in the first round, Zbyněk Linhart was elected in the electoral district No 33 – Děčín by winning 52.77% of votes. He thus became the 13th senator in the history of the Senate elected right in the first round. The closest difference between the candidates before the second round of the senatorial elections is in the electoral district No 72 – Ostrava-město and makes 59 votes.

The highest turnout was in the municipality of Čilá in the Rokycany District, where 94.12% of voters came to the elections. The lowest number of voters, 14.81%, came to vote in the municipality of Zběšičky in the Písek District. The last electoral district was processed on Saturday at 10:56 p.m.

“I would like to, on behalf of the Czech Statistical Office, express thanks to members of election commissions and employees of the CZSO at points of handover all over the country and in the headquarters for the work they have done. Despite the worsened pandemic situation, we were able to cope with the elections without serious problems. We express our thanks also to the Police of the Czech Republic and to the Fire and Rescue Service who by their timely action prevented higher damage during the emergency (water mains burst) in the CZSO headquarters this morning. Thus, they helped us to focus fully on the processing of election results,” Eva Krumpová, the First Vice President of the CZSO, said as to the progress of election results processing.

On Monday morning, the voting results will be negotiated by the State Electoral Committee. After their approval, they will be published in the Collection of Laws of the Czech Republic. The second round of the elections to the Senate of the Parliament of the CR will be held on 9 and 10 October 2020.
