Sustainable development in regions of the Czech Republic

Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) issued the analytical publication “Selected areas of sustainable development in regions of the Czech Republic 2010”. The analysis is a follow-up to publications issued in 2007 and mapping the areas of sustainable development in individual regions based on the data available from CZSO and other public sources.

Authors of the publication set down the following goals:
  • comparison of regions by selected indicators of sustainable development
  • evolution of selected indicators of sustainable development in regions of the CR in longer time series
  • depiction of basic tendencies of sustainable development in individual regions

The publication has two parts. The first part is divided according to pillars and indicators, while each indicator provides a definition, methodical description and data table according to regions in time series. The chapter is completed by graphs characterizing the evolution or links between indicators and charts. The second part focuses on depiction of basic tendencies of sustainable development in individual regions. Two pages are dedicated to each region. The introductory table is followed by main tendencies in individual pillars of sustainable development and graphical representation of time series for selected indicators in comparison with the nation-wide development.

Most important information:
  • in the social pillar, favourable trend in development of most indicators was prevailing in majority of regions, though the economic area development was often ambiguous or stagnating
  • in the period 2000 – 2008, net money income of households was on the increase, death rate was on the decrease, and prolongation of life expectancy was recorded both for males and females
  • in the environmental area, the biggest territorial differences were recorded in development of air pollution indicators. This pillar contains the indicators showing largely favourable development (growing share of broadleaved tree species, growing share of ecological agriculture) as well as indicators showing unfavourable development (growing generation of municipal waste)
