The eduroam project

Free connection to a wireless Wi-Fi network through the eduroam project

Most of the premises of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) are covered by a Wi-Fi network allowing internet access from laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. It can also be used by owners of user accounts registered in the eduroam project.

It is easy to use the roaming

A properly configured subscriber’s device connects automatically when the eduroam Wi-Fi network is available. For example, a connection to a foreign mobile operator network when roaming works the same way. This is where the acronym of the network name education roaming comes from.

Activating an eduroam account

In eduroam, a username is used consisting of two parts – the username itself and the realm. After the username, which users are used to from the information systems of their home school or institution, the @ sign and the realm are added in roaming (e.g. muni.cz, vse.cz). However, before they can start roaming, they must first set up an eduroam password.

Setting up user devices to connect to eduroam

  • To connect to eduroam securely, enter your username and password.
  • Set up certificate checking, most easily using the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT).
  • More detailed information is available in the documentation on the eduroam.cz website.

For manual settings you need to know:

  • Network name (SSID): eduroam
  • Connection protocol: 802.1x
  • Security and encryption: WPA2/AES
  • Authentication: PEAP
  • Internal authentication protocol: MS-CHAPv2
  • RADIUS server name: edu-radius.czso.cz
  • Certification Authority: CESNET CA4
  • IP address is assigned automatically via DHCP protocol

Coverage

The eduroam wireless network covers all publicly accessible premises of the CZSO’s headquarters in Prague and all CZSO’s Regional Offices.

Restrictions on traffic

User traffic is restricted in accordance with the laws of the Czech Republic. Visitor traffic is not interfered with in any way, except for the restriction of outgoing SMTP traffic (TCP/25). SMTPS (TCP/465) or Submission (TCP/587) services are used for sending mail.

Support

CZSO’s employees can contact the CZSO’s internal Helpdesk.

Other users with an eduroam account will receive support at their home institution, i.e. the one that provided them with the account.

The eduroam federation is an international project that promotes mobility and roaming in National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). In the Czech Republic, the project is under the umbrella of the CESNET association and its participants include universities, secondary schools and basic schools, and research and educational institutions. The CZSO joined the project in 2023.
