The CZSO is highly trustworthy for the public for a long time

14 March 2019

According to an opinion poll of the Public Opinion Research Centre, the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) has confidence of 62% of the population of the Czech Republic. The CZSO thus belongs to the most trustworthy institutions in the country. Among all institutions in the opinion poll, the CZSO is the one with the lowest share of those who do not have confidence in it.

The current evaluation of the CZSO is stable as for expressed trust in it. It does not differ much from results obtained in 2007 to 2016. Like in a similar survey from 2017, the share of people who do not trust to the CZSO is 23%. The total of 73% of citizens consider the CZSO to be a useful institution for the Czech Republic.

“When compared to other institutions, the trust in which we have examined in a similar way, the Czech Statistical Office, as for the level of trust attained, ranks among the top ones; it closely follows local councils, mayors, and the Constitutional Court being statistically on a comparable level with the Court,” Jan Červenka from the Public Opinion Research Centre (CVVM) says.

People come into contact with information of the CZSO most often in the media (79%). Over two fifths (43%) of the respondents came across information of the CZSO on the Internet news servers, webzines, blogs, and other websites. A fifth of the cases was in social networks. 63% of the population considers information of the CZSO trustworthy; 56% agreed that information provided by the Czech Statistical Office is politically unbiased.

“Professionalism and independence are absolutely essential for a state statistical service of high-quality. Therefore, I am pleased that the public in the Czech Republic appreciates our long-term professional and unbiased approach. It is also good that the lay public understands our statistics more and more; it belongs to our long-term goals,”  Marek Rojíček, President of the CZSO, summed it up.

The public is mostly aware that activities of the CZSO relate to the Population and Housing Census and a survey on the population size. An overall majority of Czech citizens, however, connects the CZSO in their minds also with processing of election results, monitoring of the economic development, or publishing and providing of information found out.
