Meeting of European statisticians in Prague

Yesterday, the two-day international 98 th Conference of Directors General of National Statistical Institutes (DGINS – Directeurs Généraux des Instituts Nationaux de Statistique) started in Prague. A meeting of this type is held in Prague for the first time ever.

“After almost sixty years of its existence the DGINS Conference became a valuable place for discussions on themes of programmes and methods of the European statistics. I believe that the following days will bring us to a better understanding of current topics, which not solely the European official statistics faces to,” said Ms Iva Ritschelová, President of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) at the Conference opening.

The Congress Centre of the Czech National Bank hosts the supreme representatives of national statistical institutes of the EU Member States as well as candidate countries of the EU, countries of the Western Balkan, and furthermore representatives of the European Free Trade Association and statistical divisions of international organisations as, for instance, the UN Economic Commission for Europe or OECD who meet at the DGINS Conference and accompanying events thereof (High Level Group, Partnership Group, European Statistical System Committee).

The Prague session of the DGINS Conference shall deal namely with main themes as follows: statistical framework for measuring sustainable development, interconnecting of statistics and geographic information systems, and access to microdata.

“One of this year Conference themes is dedicated to issues of sustainable development. This is close to me because the environmental statistics used to be with me for a part of my professional career, when in the 1990s I was able to assist at its birth in the Czech Republic,” adds Ms Iva Ritschelová.

The Conference speakers shall be, among others, Mr Walter Radermacher, Director General of Eurostat, Ms Marie Bohatá, Deputy Director of Eurostat, or Mr Edvard Outrata, former President of the CZSO, and Mr Bedřich Moldan, specialist in the green economy.

The regular meeting of the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC) will follow the Conference on 26 September 2012.
