Population - Differences between data published by the Czech Statistical Office and Eurostat

Demography

In the area of demography, it can happen that data published by Eurostat differ from those published by the CZSO. It is due to methodological differences, which applies mainly to a definition of the mid-year population, which is further used for calculation of relative data. Other differences occur as a result of the fact that Eurostat includes all under-coverage of the Population and Housing Census in migration. Therefore, differences arise also in tables related to positive net migration. What is also different is methodology of calculation of mortality tables.

Migration and asylum

Eurostat obtains data not only from the CZSO but also from the Ministry of the Interior of the CR. The reason why data differ is a different methodology, which is known to the CZSO and about which the CZSO has already informed the Ministry of the Interior of the CR. The Ministry provides data on all foreigners with valid residence in the CR (according to data from the Alien and Border Police), while the CZSO tries to come close to the required definition of long-term staying foreigners (real or expected duration of stay over 1 year). Thus, the CZSO until (and including) 2004 provided data on the numbers of foreigners, who stayed in the CR for a period longer than 1 year and since 2005 it has been providing data for all foreigners except persons staying in the CR for visas valid for a period over 90 days (valid for up to 1 year without the possibility to prolong the visa). The arising difference can be expressed in numbers precisely (since 2005) and a table, from which the difference is clear, is published every year in the publication “Foreigners in the CR”. Then it depends on whether Eurostat publishes data provided by the CZSO or the Ministry of the Interior of the CR. In the latter case, differences arise due to the aforementioned reasons.
