Methodology - Tourism

  • Basic concepts in the field of tourism statistics

    Tourism

International accepted definition of tourism by the European Commission and the UNWTO.

According to EU regulation is tourism defined as the activity of visitors taking a trip to a destination outside their usual environment, for less than a year, for any main purpose, including business or private purpose. Tourism does not include work stays, the purpose of which is the main job of visitors (the main source of income is at the place of stay).

According to UNWTO is tourism internationally defined as the activities of persons traveling to places and staying in places outside their usual environment for less than a comprehensive year for the purpose of leisure, business and other purposes unrelated to the activities for which they are remunerated from the place visited.

A visitor is classified as a tourist if his journey includes overnight stays or as a one-day visitor if his journey does not include overnight stays. A tourist staying in an accommodation facility is often referred to as a guest.

    The usual environment

is a geographical area, not necessarily continuous, in which a person normally lives and which can be determined on the basis of the following considerations: crossing administrative boundaries or distance from the place of usual residence, length of visits, their frequency and purpose. Closer is usual environ environment defined here.

    Business trip

is a business / professional journey outside the usual environment, which lasts more than 3 hours and does not exceed 12 months. These are congresses and conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions, business meetings and company missions, trips to conclude commercial and other contracts, installation and repair of technical equipment, trade (purchase and sale), career trips (e.g. cultural and religious actors), training to increase expertise and qualifications. On the contrary, journeys that belong to the main (predominant) scope of work (e.g. regular journeys of the insurance agent for clients) i.e. cases where travel is the main job (e.g. driver) are not considered as business trips. We also do not include military missions in the Czech Republic or abroad or service (e.g. police) escorts of other persons. You can find more examples of business trips here.

    Collective accommodation establishment

is a facility with at least five separate accommodation units (rooms or apartments) and at the same time ten beds used for tourism purposes, i.e. providing temporary accommodation for guests (including children) for holidays, tours, spa treatments, business trips, training, course, congress, symposium, children's stay at school in nature, in summer and winter camps, etc.
