International meeting of statisticians starts in Prague

2 May 2017

An international meeting of statisticians starts in Prague tomorrow. The fourth meeting of an Expert Group on Environment Statistics (EGES) has been organized by the United Nations (UN) and the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO). Tens of experts from regions all over the world will participate in it.

A three-day meeting will be chaired by the CZSO President Mrs Iva Ritschelová, who has been presiding over the international working group of the UN focusing on the environmental issues for many years already: “The expert group called EGES, in which National Statistical Institutes both of developed and developing countries are represented as well as many important international organizations, will deal with implementation of a new Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics. The agenda includes finalization of a methodological manual for an updated version of the Framework. Afterwards, preparation of technical assistances or training of experts in selected developing countries will follow.”

The original Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics was created in 1984. Its updated version was approved by the UN Statistical Commission in 2013. Experts from the CZSO also significantly contributed to the preparation of the strategic document. The Framework serves individual countries as an important support for creation and further development of the national system of the environment statistics.

The EGES team meets in the Czech Republic for the first time, namely thanks to an agreement between the CZSO President Iva Ritschelová with the director of the UN Statistics Division Stefan Schweinfest. Previous meetings took place in the UN headquarters in New York.
