Flash Estimates of Quarterly GDP for The EU Available to Users as Early as 30 Days after The End of The Quarter

26. April 2016

Starting Friday Eurostat will publish preliminary flash estimates of quarterly GDP for the euro area and for the European Union at 30 days after the end of the quarter. This way Eurostat responds to the ever increasing demand of users for flash data for the whole European Union.

The decision to begin with releasing of the preliminary flash estimates by 15 days earlier than before is based on results of the pilot phase from respective quarters in 2012 to 2015. The methodology applied is to a substantial portion identical to the current methodology for flash GDP estimates published at 45 days after the end of the quarter. The main difference consists in the use of incomplete estimates for respective Member States. The last test estimates for Q4 2015 attained the coverage of 91% of the EU28 and 94% of the euro area countries.

Since 2008 the Czech Statistical Office has been publishing the GDP estimates approximately at 45 days after the end of the quarter so far. As of yet the Czech Statistical Office has not adopted the aforementioned shortened period of the GDP publishing in the same way as the majority of national statistical offices of the EU Member States.
